Pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicles in America. The Ford F-Series has held the #1 sales crown for over 40 years straight, and the Silverado, RAM 1500, and Tundra/Tacoma round out the top tier. Truck owners are intensely brand-loyal and love personalization — including custom plates (sometimes called vanity plates or personalized license plates depending on which DMV form you're filling out).

Quick note on terminology: 'custom plate', 'vanity plate', and 'personalized license plate' all describe the same thing — a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combo. Most state DMVs use 'Personalized Plate' as the official label; California uses 'Environmental License Plate' for its program. We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every truck angle: model names (F-150, Silverado, RAM, Tundra, Tacoma, Raptor, TRX), engine references (Coyote, Cummins, Duramax, Power Stroke, EcoBoost), trim levels (Lariat, Limited, TRD Pro), and the off-road / towing / diesel culture vocabulary every truck guy uses.

Some good ones survived. Every personalized plate below has a live availability link.

How we built this list

We compiled a list of thousands of candidate plates from r/Trucks, F150Forum, Silverado Sierra, RAM Forum, TundraSolutions, and Tacoma World. Every model, every engine, every trim, every culture-specific term that real truck people use.

Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on April 9, 2026. The plates below are the ones still available in at least one state.

How to check if a vanity plate is available

The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:

  1. 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
  2. 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
  3. 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.

How to actually order a vanity plate

Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good vanity plate ideas for a pickup truck?

The best truck vanity plate ideas reference the brand, the use case (off-road, towing, diesel), or the lifestyle. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, TRCKLF (truck life), SILVRD (Silverado), MUDDNG (mudding), RAPTRF (Raptor), TOWPWR, DUALY, and TRKBOY are all still available in multiple US states. Trademarked plates RAM, F150, and TUNDRA are blocked or taken in most states.

Can I get F150 as a vanity plate?

F150 is taken in every PlateHog-supported state. Ford has also trademarked the F-Series naming, so even if a state had it free, the trademark filter would likely block it. Workarounds: F150LF (F-150 life), F150GT, or just use a creative truck-related plate like TRCKLF or RAPTRF.

Vanity plate vs custom plate vs personalized plate — which should I search?

Search any of them — they all describe the same thing. Different state DMVs prefer different official names: most use 'Personalized Plate' (Texas, Florida, New York, Tennessee), while California uses 'Environmental License Plate'. Truck owners on r/Trucks, F150Forum, and Tacoma World use 'custom plate' and 'vanity plate' roughly equally. PlateHog matches whichever phrasing you typed because the underlying DMV process is identical regardless of label.

What's the difference between a Ford F-150 Raptor and a Raptor R?

The standard F-150 Raptor uses Ford's 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 producing 450 hp. The Raptor R, introduced in 2023, uses a supercharged 5.2L Predator V8 borrowed from the Mustang GT500, producing 700 hp. The Raptor R is Ford's answer to the RAM 1500 TRX. Both share the wide-body suspension geometry and 37-inch tire option.

How much does a truck vanity plate cost?

Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV, not by the truck manufacturer. They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 initial in California. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.

How do I check if a truck vanity plate is available?

Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea and PlateHog will return live availability across all 11 supported state DMVs in real time.

What does TRCKLF mean on a license plate?

TRCKLF is short for 'truck life' — a catchall expression of pickup-owner identity. It's one of the most popular truck vanity plate ideas because it's brand-agnostic (works on any Ford, Chevy, RAM, Toyota, or Nissan pickup) and immediately readable. PlateHog's April 2026 check found it available in nine US states.
