TL;DR
We've tested thousands of jeep vanity plate ideas against live DMV systems across 11 US states. As of May 6, 2026, 8 of the best ones are still available right now. Jeep owners are a tribe. The wave, the rubber ducks, the trail rating arguments, the "it's a Jeep thing" stickers — all of it points to one of the most identity-driven car cultures on the planet. Which is exactly why most of the obvious custom plates are long gone.
Whether you call them vanity plates, custom plates, or personalized license plates, they're the same thing: a state-issued plate with the letters and numbers you picked. We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every Jeep angle we could think of — model names, chassis codes (TJ, JK, JL, YJ), trail badges (Rubicon, Sahara, Willys), off-road slang (locked, lifted, crawler), and the full duck-duck-Jeep cultural canon. Then we ran each one across 11 state DMVs in real time.
Some of these are still wide open. Others are down to two or three states. Every personalized plate below has a live availability link so you can verify before you head to the DMV.
How we built this list
We compiled a list of thousands of candidate plates pulled from r/Jeep, JeepForum, Wrangler Forum, and the JL Wrangler Forums — every model name (Wrangler, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Renegade, Compass), every chassis code (TJ, JK, JL, JT, YJ, CJ, XJ), every trim badge (Rubicon, Sahara, Willys, Mojave), every off-road term we could find, and every duck-duck-Jeep reference that survived contact with the trademark filter.
Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states (CA, FL, TX, VA, OH, NY, PA, TN, ME, WV, KS) on April 9, 2026. The plates featured below are the ones that came back AVAILABLE in at least one state.
8 Jeep Vanity Plates Still Available
Dirt road. Six characters that perfectly describe what a Jeep is built for. Available in nine states — the most availability we found on any Jeep plate. If you've ever taken a Wrangler off pavement on purpose, this plate has your name on it. The fact that it's still open in nine state DMVs in 2026 is borderline criminal.
Rubicon. The trail badge. The trim that comes with locking diffs, sway-bar disconnect, and the unspoken understanding that you actually intend to use them. RUBCON is a clean 6-character version that sidesteps the trademark filter on RUBICON — and it's still available in four states. Won't last.
Mudder. As in "that thing's a mudder" — the highest compliment one Jeep owner can give another. Eight states. Pair it with 35s and a 3-inch lift and you'll never have to explain it to anyone.
The Jeep wave. The two-finger acknowledgment between Wrangler drivers that started in the WWII Willys days and somehow survived into the era of $80,000 Rubicon 392s. Seven states. Get it before another JL owner does.
Trail-pathed. Eight characters of pure off-road identity. Available in eight states. This is the custom plate for the person whose Jeep has actual scratches on the rock rails — not the one whose Wrangler has only ever seen mall parking lots.
Rock crawler. The discipline of slowly dragging a 6,000-pound vehicle over boulders with everyone watching, hoping nothing snaps. Seven states. Pairs nicely with a winch you've actually used.
Off-road. Six characters, zero subtlety. Six states. The kind of personalized plate you put on the Jeep that lives at Moab half the year and at the dealership the other half (because you actually use it).
Wrangler. The flagship. The one that started the cult. WRNGLR sneaks past the trademark filter that blocks WRANGLER and is still available in three states. Three. As in "by the time you finish reading this paragraph, two of those will be gone."
Vanity plate cost and rules by state

| Virginia | 7 | $10 / year | 4–6 weeks |

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Taken — But Not Forever
These plates are claimed in every state we checked. But here's the thing — plates change hands all the time. People sell cars, move states, let registrations lapse. Any of these could open up tomorrow.
Don't give up on your dream plate

What are some good vanity plate ideas for a Jeep Wrangler?
The best Jeep Wrangler vanity plate ideas play on off-road culture and chassis codes. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, DRTRTE (dirt road), RUBCON (Rubicon), MUDDNR, JWAVE (Jeep wave), and TRDPTH (trail-pathed) are still available in multiple US states. The trademarked plates JEEP, WRANGLER, and RUBICON are blocked at the DMV level in most states.
Can I get JEEP as a vanity plate?
No. Jeep is a registered trademark, and most state DMVs (including California, Florida, Texas, and New York) automatically reject vanity plate applications containing trademarked brand names. The same restriction applies to WRANGLER and RUBICON. Workarounds like JEEPN, JEEPR, WRNGLR, and RUBCON usually pass the filter and are tested in this guide.
Vanity plate vs custom plate vs personalized plate — what's the difference?
There isn't one. State DMVs use different official names for the same product: California's program is called the 'Environmental License Plate', Texas calls them 'Personalized Plates', and Wrangler-friendly states like Tennessee and West Virginia just use 'Personalized Plates'. The Jeep community uses 'custom plate' and 'vanity plate' interchangeably on r/Jeep and JeepForum. PlateHog matches whatever term Google's search ranks for — they all describe an alphanumeric combo the owner picked.
What does the Jeep wave mean?
The Jeep wave is a two-finger or full-hand acknowledgment between drivers of Jeep Wranglers (and sometimes Gladiators) when passing on the road. It dates back to WWII Willys MB drivers recognizing each other in civilian life and has become one of the most enduring car-culture traditions in America. JWAVE is a popular vanity plate among Wrangler owners — currently available in seven states per PlateHog's April 2026 check.
How much does a Jeep vanity plate cost?
Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV, not by Jeep. They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 for the initial issuance in California. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.
How do I check if a Jeep vanity plate is available?
Use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea (2–7 alphanumeric characters), and you'll see live availability across all 11 supported states in seconds. PlateHog queries each state DMV in real time.
What's the rubber duck thing on Jeeps?
Duck-duck-Jeep is a Jeep community tradition where owners leave small rubber ducks on other Jeeps as a friendly gesture. It started in 2020 in Ontario and went viral. Many Jeep owners decorate their dashboards with collected ducks. It's one of the most recognizable Jeep culture touchpoints alongside the Jeep wave.
