Funny vanity plates — also searched as 'funny custom license plates' or 'funny personalized plates' — are the highest-volume search category on the entire personalized-plate internet. People search them for inspiration, for laughs, for gift ideas, and to find the kind of clever 7-character joke that turns a parking lot into a comedy show.
Quick definition: 'vanity plate', 'custom plate', and 'personalized license plate' are three names for the same product — a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combination. Most state DMVs use 'Personalized Plate' as their official label; California uses 'Environmental License Plate'. The challenge with funny ones: state DMVs have aggressive filters. Every obvious joke (LOL, WTF, FUNNY, JOKER) was claimed years ago. Every clever one is one DMV reviewer's mood away from rejection. We pointed PlateHog at 65 funny plate candidates pulled from BuzzFeed lists, Reddit threads, and decades of internet culture, and ran every single one through 11 state DMVs in real time.
These are the survivors — funny custom plates that actually got past the filter and are still sitting there, waiting for someone with a sense of humor to grab them. Every plate links to a live availability check.
How we built this list
We sourced our candidate list of thousands of plates from r/funny, r/vanityplates, BuzzFeed's funny license plate lists, Twitter/X meme archives, and the public rejected-plates database that PlateHog maintains in its Hall of Shame (19,000+ FOIA-sourced rejected plates from California and New York DMVs). The goal was to find jokes the filter would actually approve.
Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states (CA, FL, TX, VA, OH, NY, PA, TN, ME, WV, KS) on April 9, 2026. The plates featured below are the ones still available in at least one state.
8 Funny Vanity Plates Still Available
No way. Eight states. The custom plate that perfectly captures every reaction the rest of the road has to your driving. Pair it with literally any car and the joke writes itself. NOWAYX is one of the most universally readable funny plates we found.
I see you driver. Eight states. The plate that quietly tells the person tailgating you that yes, you noticed, and yes, they should back off. The kind of subtle aggression a license plate is uniquely qualified to deliver.
I'm driven. Seven states. A double meaning — both literally driven (because you're, you know, driving) and motivationally driven (because you put a vanity plate on your car about motivation). Both readings are perfect.
N-plate. The negation of the entire concept. A vanity plate that says "this is not a vanity plate." Seven states. The kind of meta joke that takes a second to land and then keeps landing for the rest of the day. Galaxy-brain energy.
Get off Y. As in "get off my lawn," "get off my back," or just generally "get off Y." Seven states. The plate for the person whose horn gets a workout in traffic and who has finally found a way to communicate with the world in print.
Fast enough. Seven states. The honest plate. Most cars are fast enough — your daily-driver Camry is fast enough, your wife's CR-V is fast enough, your minivan is, against all reason, fast enough. FASTNF is a quiet rebuke to the entire horsepower-obsessed car culture.
Exhaust. Six states. A pun on both car parts and parental burnout. Pair it with a minivan and let the world figure out which meaning you intend. (Both. The answer is both.)
Cool ride. Six states. The most underplayed compliment a car can give itself. Best results when paired with a car that is, in fact, a cool ride — not the kind of car where the personalized plate is a self-own.
Vanity plate cost and rules by state
Vanity plate fees, character limits, and processing times vary considerably across the 11 states PlateHog monitors. The table below summarizes the key rules for each. According to state DMV records, every supported state allows 7-character plates except New York, which permits up to 8.

| Florida | 7 | $28 / year | 2–4 weeks |
| Texas | 7 | $85–$195 | 3–5 weeks |
| Virginia | 7 | $10 / year | 4–6 weeks |
| Ohio | 7 | $50 + $10 replacement | 2–4 weeks |
| New York | 8 | $60 initial / $31 annual | 4–6 weeks |
| Pennsylvania | 7 | $102 | 4–8 weeks |
| Tennessee | 7 | $35 | 2–4 weeks |
| Maine | 7 | $25 initial / $15 renewal | 2–4 weeks |

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Taken — But Not Forever
These plates are claimed in every state we checked. But here's the thing — plates change hands all the time. People sell cars, move states, let registrations lapse. Any of these could open up tomorrow.

What are some funny vanity plate ideas?
The best funny vanity plate ideas play on double meanings, self-deprecation, or universal driving experiences. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, NOWAYX, ICUDVR (I see you driver), IMDRVN, NPLATE, GETOFY, FASTNF (fast enough), XHAUST (exhaust/exhausted), and COOLRD are all still available in multiple US states. Generic funny plates like LOL, WTF, FUNNY, and YOLO are taken in every state we tested.
What words are banned on vanity plates?
State DMVs reject vanity plates containing profanity, drug references, gang signs, references to violence, slurs, sexually explicit terms, and combinations that imply law enforcement (like NOTACOP). Each state maintains its own banned-words list. California publishes its rejected-plate list publicly — PlateHog has indexed 18,000+ California rejections in its Hall of Shame database.
Can I get LOL as a vanity plate?
No. Three-character vanity plates are extremely rare and almost always taken. LOL is gone in every PlateHog-supported state and has been since the early 2010s. If you want a similar vibe, try ROFL (still available in 3 states as of April 2026) or HAHA (taken everywhere — sorry).
Custom plate, vanity plate, personalized plate — is there a difference?
No — they're three names for the same thing: a state-issued plate where the driver picked the letters and numbers. State DMV terminology varies (Texas: 'Personalized Plate'; California: 'Environmental License Plate'; Florida: 'Personalized Plate'), and Reddit, BuzzFeed, and Twitter use 'custom plate' and 'vanity plate' interchangeably. PlateHog handles all three search phrasings; the underlying availability check is identical.
How much does a funny vanity plate cost?
Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV and don't vary based on theme or 'funniness.' They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 initial in California. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.
What's the funniest vanity plate ever?
There's no objective answer, but PlateHog's Hall of Shame catalogs 19,000+ plates that state DMVs rejected — including some legendary creative attempts. The funniest approved vanity plates tend to be ones that work on multiple levels: a literal meaning, a self-deprecating meaning, and a hidden meaning that only certain people will catch.
How do I check if a funny vanity plate is available?
Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea (2–7 alphanumeric characters), and PlateHog will run it against all 11 supported state DMVs in real time. Results show in seconds.
