The Ford Mustang is the best-selling sports car in American history, which means the Mustang community has had 60+ years to claim every obvious custom plate. STANG, MUSTANG, GT500, BULLITT — gone, gone, gone, gone.
Custom plates, vanity plates, and personalized license plates all describe the same thing: a state-issued plate where the owner picked the letters and numbers. (Most state DMVs use 'Personalized Plate' as the official label; California uses 'Environmental License Plate' for its program.) We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every Mustang angle — every chassis code (Fox-body, SN95, S197, S550, S650), every special edition (Bullitt, Mach 1, Boss, Shelby, Dark Horse), every Coyote/Voodoo engine reference, and every Cars-and-Coffee deep cut we could find.
Some got through. Every personalized plate below links to a live availability check.
How we built this list
We compiled a list of thousands of candidate plates from r/Mustang, Mustang7G, the SVT Cobra Mustang Forums, and the S650 Mustang community. Every chassis code, every trim, every engine reference, and every culture-specific term that real Mustang owners actually use.
Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on April 9, 2026. The plates below are the ones still available in at least one state.
8 Mustang Vanity Plates Still Available
Wind horse. Nine states — the most availability we found on any Mustang plate. The Mustang's name was supposedly inspired by the P-51 Mustang fighter plane and the wild horse symbol. WNDHRS captures both vibes in six characters. Take it before the Coyote crowd reads this article.
Stanging. The verb form of "driving a Stang." Nine states. Pure pony-car energy. If your idea of a perfect Saturday is parking lot exits at 4,500 RPM, this plate writes itself.
EcoBoost. The 2.3L turbo four-cylinder Mustang that the V8 purists love to dunk on — and the one that's actually outsold the GT for the last decade. Seven states. Wear the EcoBoost badge proudly. The internet is wrong about this car.
Tremec. The Mexican-built manual transmission company that supplies Ford with the TR-3160 6-speed in the GT and the TR-9070 7-speed dual-clutch in the Dark Horse. If you spec'd a manual Mustang in 2026, you owe Tremec a thank-you. Six states.
Mustang-er. The agent-noun form. Six states. A clean, friendly custom plate that signals identity without being aggressive about it. Pair it with a Bronze Appearance Package S650 GT and you have a complete look.
Recaro. The German seat manufacturer that supplies the optional Recaro buckets in performance Mustangs (Mach 1, Dark Horse, GT350R). Five states. The personalized plate for the person whose Mustang has the heated/cooled Recaros option box checked and the carbon fiber wheel option to match.
Pony car. The genre the Mustang created in 1964 — small, affordable, sporty coupes with long hoods and short decks. PONYCR is still available in five states. Use it on anything from a Foxbody to a Dark Horse and you're representing the entire genre.
Grabber. As in Grabber Blue, Grabber Yellow, Grabber Green, Grabber Lime — the Ford color names that have been recurring on Mustangs since the 1970s. Five states. The plate for someone whose Mustang is in a color that makes other people stop and ask what it's called.

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

What are some good vanity plate ideas for a Ford Mustang?
The best Mustang vanity plate ideas play on the pony car identity, the engine, or the chassis generation. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, WNDHRS (wind horse), STNGNG (stanging), ECOBT (EcoBoost), TREMEC, and PONYCR are still available in multiple US states. The trademarked plates MUSTANG, SHELBY, BULLITT, and MACH 1 are blocked in most states.
Can I get MUSTANG as a vanity plate?
No. MUSTANG is a Ford trademark and most state DMVs reject vanity plate applications containing trademarked brand names. The same restriction applies to SHELBY, BULLITT, and MACH 1. Workarounds like MSTNG, MSTNGR, MUSTNG, or STNGNG usually pass the filter.
Custom plate, vanity plate, personalized plate — what should I search?
Search any of them — they all return the same product. The official DMV terminology varies by state ('Personalized Plate' is most common; California uses 'Environmental License Plate'), but Mustang7G, r/Mustang, and the SVT Cobra Mustang Forums all use 'custom plate' and 'vanity plate' interchangeably. PlateHog optimizes for whichever phrasing you happen to type.
What's the difference between a Mustang GT and a Dark Horse?
The Mustang GT (S650 generation) has a 5.0L Coyote V8 making 480 hp. The Dark Horse uses a hand-assembled version of the same engine with stronger internals, oil cooling upgrades, and a Tremec TR-9070 7-speed dual-clutch option, producing 500 hp. The Dark Horse also gets unique chassis tuning, MagneRide dampers, and a Brembo brake package.
How much does a Mustang vanity plate cost?
Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV, not by Ford. They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 in California. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.
How do I check if a Mustang vanity plate is available?
Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea (2–7 alphanumeric characters), and PlateHog will return live availability across all 11 supported states.
What does ECOBT mean on a Mustang plate?
ECOBT is short for EcoBoost — Ford's 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, available in non-GT Mustangs since 2015. The EcoBoost Mustang produces 315 hp and gets significantly better fuel economy than the V8 GT. It's been a top-selling trim despite being mocked by V8 purists.
