All plates verified available as of May 2026 via real-time DMV checks

Tesla owners are some of the most opinionated, brand-loyal, custom-plate-loving people on the road. The good news: there are still creative angles the rest of the community hasn't picked clean yet. The bad news: if you don't grab the one you want, the next person reading this article will.

Custom license plates (also called vanity plates or personalized license plates by most state DMVs) let an owner pick the exact alphanumeric combo on their plate. We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every Tesla angle we could think of — model names, EV puns, electricity references, Plaid mode jokes, charging slang, Elon-era inside jokes — and ran them across 11 state DMVs in real time. Most of the obvious ones (TESLA, PLAID, MODEL3) are gone everywhere. Some clever ones survived. Here they are.

Every personalized plate below links straight to a live availability check, so by the time you click through, you'll know whether it's still on the table in your state.

How we built this list

We compiled a list of thousands of Tesla-related plate candidates pulled from r/TeslaMotors threads, the TeslaMotorsClub forums, Twitter/X communities, and our own brain-storming sessions. The list covered every model (S, 3, X, Y, Cybertruck, Roadster), every trim (Performance, Long Range, Plaid), every powertrain reference (kWh, MWh, lithium, regen, ionz), and every meme that's become Tesla-community shorthand.

Then we ran each plate through PlateHog's real-time DMV adapter for all 11 supported states (CA, FL, TX, VA, OH, NY, PA, TN, ME, WV, KS) on April 9, 2026. The plates featured below are the ones that came back AVAILABLE in at least one state. Each has a direct link to verify the result yourself before you head to the DMV.

PPLAID

Plaid mode. The trim level that turns a Model S into a 1,020-horsepower sleeper that humiliates supercars in 2.1 seconds. PPLAID is a clean six-character workaround to the trademark-blocked PLAID — and it's still available in four states including California, which is basically Plaid HQ. This one will not survive the week.

KWHRZ
CA — CaliforniaFL — FloridaTX — TexasVA — VirginiaOH — OhioNY — New YorkME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Kilowatt-hours, the unit of energy every Tesla owner obsesses over. KWHRZ is the EV equivalent of a horsepower brag — except instead of pretending you have 700 hp, you're flexing about how efficient your battery management is. Available in nine states. Whoever reads it will either nod knowingly or have absolutely no idea what it means. That's the perfect ratio.

MEGWAT

Megawatt. One million watts. The amount of power Tesla's V4 Superchargers theoretically push, the unit Tesla Energy talks about in its Powerpack/Megapack pitches, and a perfect car-nerd brag for anyone who actually understands what a megawatt means. Eight states. Pick yours.

LDCRSS
CA — CaliforniaFL — FloridaVA — VirginiaOH — OhioNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Ludicrous mode — the original Tesla insanity setting before Plaid existed. Ludicrous launched the first wave of "my electric sedan beats your supercar" YouTube videos, and it's still the trim badge that older Model S P90D/P100D owners proudly defend. Available in nine states, which is the most availability we found on any Tesla plate. Won't be around long.

LUDICR

The other Ludicrous abbreviation, in case LDCRSS gets sniped before you read this. Same energy, different syllable count. Owning either of these is the closest a license plate can get to a personality disorder diagnosis — in the best possible way.

FLORIDA
TESLOV
FL — FloridaNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Tesla love. The kind of personalized plate you put on a Model Y owned by someone who has, at minimum, three Tesla-branded shirts and an unhealthy attachment to over-the-air updates. Available in six states — and unironically perfect for it.

ECOFRI

Eco-friendly. The original reason most people thought they were buying a Tesla — until they discovered Insane mode and forgot the planet entirely. Wear the eco label, drive it like you stole it. Seven states.

Jolted. Past-tense electric shock as a custom plate, which is approximately what your passenger feels when you stab the throttle in a Model S Plaid. Seven states. JOLTD is the kind of plate that wins compliments at coffee shops and Cars & Coffee meets in equal measure.

How to check if a vanity plate is available

The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:

  1. 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
  2. 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
  3. 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.

How to actually order a vanity plate

Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good vanity plate ideas for a Tesla?

The best Tesla vanity plate ideas play on EV-specific concepts: KWHRZ (kilowatt hours), MEGWAT (megawatts), PPLAID (Plaid mode), LDCRSS (Ludicrous mode), JOLTD, and EVONLY. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, all six of these are still available in multiple US states. Trademark-protected words like TESLA and PLAID are blocked at the DMV level in most states.

What's the difference between custom, vanity, and personalized license plates?

Nothing — they all describe the same thing: a state-issued plate where the owner picked the letters and numbers. Different state DMVs prefer different official names. California calls them 'Environmental License Plates' (its specific vanity-plate program); Texas uses 'Personalized Plates'; New York's DMV uses 'Personalized Plates' too. PlateHog uses 'vanity', 'custom', and 'personalized' interchangeably across our blog posts and state guides — including this one — because Google groups them as synonyms.

Can I get TESLA as a vanity plate?

No. Tesla is a registered trademark, and most state DMVs (including California, Florida, Texas, and New York) automatically reject plate applications containing trademarked brand names. The same restriction applies to PLAID and ROADSTR. The workaround is to use a clever variant — PPLAID, TESLOV, or TSLAFN — that isn't trademark-blocked.

How many characters can a Tesla vanity plate have?

Most state DMVs allow vanity plates of 2 to 7 characters (letters and numbers only). New York is the only PlateHog-supported state that allows up to 8 characters. There are no special character limits for Tesla plates — the same rules apply regardless of vehicle make.

How much does a Tesla vanity plate cost?

Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV, not by Tesla. They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 for the initial issuance in California. Florida charges $28/year, Texas $85–$195 depending on plate design, and Pennsylvania $102. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.

How do I check if a Tesla vanity plate is available in my state?

Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea (2–7 alphanumeric characters), and you'll see live availability across all 11 supported states in seconds. PlateHog queries each state DMV in real time, so the results match what you'd see on the DMV's own website.

Why was my Tesla vanity plate application rejected?

DMVs reject vanity plates for trademark conflicts (TESLA, PLAID), profanity, drug references, gang references, references to violence, and combinations that resemble government plates. Each state has its own banned-words list. California publishes a public list of rejected plates that PlateHog has indexed in its Hall of Shame.
