We Used AI to Check 10+ DMVs: These BMW Vanity Plates Are Actually Available
Every M badge, chassis code, and Bimmer slang term — checked.
All plates verified available as of April 2026
We pointed our AI at every BMW model, chassis code, engine designation, and enthusiast slang term and checked them across 10+ state DMVs. The Bimmer community is thorough — almost everything is claimed. Almost.
Brief terminology note: “custom plate”, “vanity plate”, and “personalized license plate” all describe the same thing — a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combination. State DMVs use different official labels (most use “Personalized Plate”; California uses “Environmental License Plate”), and BMW owners on Bimmerforums and r/BMW use the three terms interchangeably. This guide does too.
BMW owners are a different breed when it comes to custom plates. E46M3? Gone before it became a $60K car. MPOWER? Taken in every state since approximately 2004. Even chassis codes like E30 and E90 are claimed everywhere. This community doesn't leave scraps.
But we found some. We ran hundreds of combinations through PlateHog's AI-powered multi-state search — model names, engine codes, transmission references, forum slang, inside jokes — and pulled out the personalized plates that are genuinely, right now, today available. Here they are.
Available BMW Plates
M Performance. Available in five states — that's the most availability we found on any BMW plate, and it won't last. M Performance is BMW's factory performance line that sits between a stock 3 Series and a full M car, but let's be honest: half the people rocking M Performance intake ducts and carbon mirror caps have spent more on parts than the actual M car costs in upgrades. Texas and Florida are basically BMW M Performance HQ. The community is massive and growing. Five states today, zero states next month.
M3 4 Life. Leet speak on a license plate is peak car-guy energy, and we're here for it. The E30 M3 started the legend, the E36 made it accessible, the E46 perfected it, the E90 went V8 (we don't talk about rod bearings), the F80 went turbo, and the G80 made everyone argue about grilles for three years straight. If the M3 is your car — whether you've owned one or you've owned five — this plate announces your whole identity before you open the door. California only.
Inline 6. The engine layout that BMW basically owns. From the M20 to the S50 to the S54 to the N54 to the N55 to the B58 — pick your generation, they all pull, and they all sound like mechanical perfection above 5,000 rpm. The N54/N55/B58 debate is the BMW equivalent of the aircooled-vs-watercooled Porsche argument, and it's equally pointless because the correct answer is "all of them." NLN6 is a clean, subtle way to rep that silky straight-six. Available in California, where you'll see enough M cars on Mulholland to fill a dealership.
Two characters. The most iconic BMW nameplate ever made. We checked every state we support and Tennessee is the only one where M3 is still sitting there, unclaimed, waiting. If you own an M3 — any generation, any color, any number of rod bearing rebuilds — and you live in Tennessee or are willing to register there, stop reading this article and go get this custom plate right now. Two-character personalized plates get sniped the instant someone finds out they exist. You've been warned.
BMW M division. Four characters, straight to the point, no ambiguity. This is for the people who actually own M cars — the M2, M3, M4, M5, M8, whatever you've got — not the people who bolt ///M badges onto their X1 and hope nobody notices at Cars and Coffee (we notice). West Virginia only, and given how clean this personalized plate reads, it's not going to be available much longer.
What we checked
We weren't messing around. The search list included every BMW model name (M2, M3, M4, M5, M8, X3M, X5M, Z4), every chassis code (E30, E36, E46, E90, E92, F80, F82, G80, G82), every engine code (S50, S52, S54, S55, S58, N54, N55, B58, S62, S65, S85), every community term (Bimmer, M Power, Ultimate, Sharkfin), and every creative abbreviation and leet-speak variant we could think of. All of it went through PlateHog's AI search across 10+ state DMVs.
The result: the BMW community has absolutely pillaged the DMV databases. The plates above are the survivors — abbreviations and references niche enough to dodge the crowd but recognizable enough that anyone at a BMW meet will know exactly what they mean.
Taken — But Not Forever
These are claimed in every state we checked. But plates change hands all the time. People sell cars, move states, let registrations lapse. That E46M3 plate? It could open up any day.
