There are about 17 million living veterans in the United States, and military culture is one of the most identity-rich custom-plate demographics there is. Most state DMVs offer specialty veteran plates with branch insignia — but those are different from the personalized vanity plates this article is about.
Note: 'custom plate', 'vanity plate', and 'personalized license plate' are interchangeable terms — they all refer to a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combo. (Different DMVs prefer different official names: most use 'Personalized Plate'; California uses 'Environmental License Plate'.) We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force, National Guard), every motto (Hooah, Oorah, Hooyah, Semper Fi), every unit reference (Airborne, Ranger, SF), and every veteran-pride term we could find.
Most of the obvious ones are gone everywhere — VET, USMC, ARMY, NAVY. But some creative variants survived. Every personalized plate below links to a live availability check.
How we built this list
We compiled a list of thousands of candidate plates from r/Veterans, r/Military, r/USMC, r/Army, r/Navy, r/AirForce, and the dozens of branch-specific community pages we follow. Every motto, every unit, every credential, every memorial reference.
Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on April 9, 2026. The plates featured below are the ones that came back AVAILABLE in at least one state.
8 Military Vanity Plates Still Available
Veteran now. Eight states. The plate for the recently transitioned service member who's still adjusting to civilian life and wants to make sure everyone knows the uniform may be off but the service stays. The most-available military plate we found.
Marine veteran. Eight states. Six characters that immediately establish the highest possible level of inter-service trash talk credibility. Pair it with an EGA window decal and you have the complete look.
Heroes. Eight states. The plate that's quietly meaningful without being aggressively patriotic. Works for any branch, any era, any role. The kind of plate people compliment without you having to explain.
Army National Guard. Eight states. For the Guard members who've been activated more times in the last decade than they were expecting when they signed up — and who still show up because that's the job. Six characters of pride.
Coast Guard. Seven states. The smallest active-duty military service, the most under-recognized, and the one with the highest civilian save count of any branch. Coasties: this is your custom plate.
Deploy. Six states. Six letters that mean different things depending on whether you've been deployed once or seven times — but every veteran reading this plate will understand the weight of it.
Soldier. Six states. The Army-specific job title (Marines are Marines, sailors are sailors, airmen are airmen, soldiers are soldiers) — and a plate that needs no further explanation.
Veteran proud. Six states. A clean, friendly version of the louder veteran plates. Works for retirees, working veterans, and everyone in between. The kind of personalized plate that ages well across decades of car ownership.

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Taken — But Not Forever
These plates are claimed in every state we checked. But here's the thing — plates change hands all the time. People sell cars, move states, let registrations lapse. Any of these could open up tomorrow.
Don't give up on your dream plate

What are some good vanity plate ideas for veterans?
The best veteran vanity plate ideas reference branch, era, or role. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, VETNOW, MARNVT (Marine veteran), HEROSZ, ARNGRD (Army National Guard), COASTG (Coast Guard), and VETPRD (veteran proud) are still available in multiple US states. Most short or generic veteran plates (VET, USMC, ARMY, NAVY) are taken in every state we tested.
What's the difference between a veteran plate and a vanity plate?
Most state DMVs offer specialty veteran plates that display branch insignia (Army star, Marine EGA, etc.) and are issued only to verified veterans — these are separate from personalized vanity plates. A vanity (personalized) plate is just custom letters or numbers that anyone can apply for. Many veterans choose to combine both: a specialty veteran plate base with a vanity plate text, where the state offers it.
Custom plate, vanity plate, personalized plate — what should a veteran search for?
Any of those terms returns the same product. State DMV terminology varies — most use 'Personalized Plate' (Texas, Florida, New York), California uses 'Environmental License Plate', and others use 'Vanity Plate' on their forms. On r/Veterans and the branch-specific subreddits, 'custom plate' and 'vanity plate' show up roughly equally. PlateHog covers all three search phrasings; the underlying availability check is identical.
Can I get USMC as a vanity plate?
USMC is trademarked by the U.S. Marine Corps, and most state DMVs reject plate applications containing official military branch acronyms. The same applies to USARMY, USAF, USN, and USCG. The workaround is to use creative variants like MARNVT, ARMYVT, USAFVT, NAVYVT, or COASTG.
How much does a veteran vanity plate cost?
Vanity plate fees are the same regardless of veteran status — they range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 initial in California. Some states (Florida, Texas, Virginia) offer veteran specialty plate bases for free or reduced fees with proof of service, but the vanity (personalized) text fee is the same. See the cost table earlier on this page.
How do I prove veteran status for a special plate?
Most state DMVs accept a DD-214 discharge document, a Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC), or a state-issued veteran ID. Each state has its own list of acceptable documents — check your state DMV website for specifics. PlateHog doesn't process veteran plate applications; we just check vanity plate availability.
How do I check if a military vanity plate is available?
Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea (2–7 alphanumeric characters), and PlateHog will return live availability across all 11 supported states.
