Medical professionals are one of the largest custom-plate demographics in America. There are roughly 4.7 million registered nurses, 1.1 million physicians, and millions more EMTs, paramedics, dentists, and pharmacists — all of whom take pride in their work and many of whom drive cars they want to brand with that identity.
Vanity plates, custom plates, and personalized license plates all describe the same thing — a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combination. Most state DMVs use 'Personalized Plate' as their official label; California's program is the 'Environmental License Plate'. We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every angle: nursing credentials (RN, BSN, MSN, NP), physician specialties (cardio, ortho, oncology, surgery), allied health roles (paramedic, EMT, pharmacist, dentist), and the universal scrubs-squad culture references.
Most of the obvious personalized plates (RN, NURSE, DOC, MD) are gone in every state. But some clever ones survived. Every plate below links to a live availability check.
How we built this list
We compiled a list of thousands of candidate plates pulled from r/nursing, r/medicine, r/EMS, r/dentistry, and dozens of professional Facebook groups. The list covered every credential abbreviation, every specialty, and every insider joke we could find.
Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states (CA, FL, TX, VA, OH, NY, PA, TN, ME, WV, KS) on April 9, 2026. The plates featured below are the ones that came back AVAILABLE in at least one state.
8 Nurse & Doctor Vanity Plates Still Available
Oncology. The medical specialty dealing with cancer diagnosis and treatment — and one of the most demanding fields in medicine. ONCLGY is still available in nine states. The plate for the oncologist or oncology nurse who wants to publicly represent one of the hardest specialties in healthcare. Most other six-letter specialty plates are long gone — this one isn't, somehow.
RN hero. The plate every nurse who lived through 2020 deserved and didn't get. Six states. RN HERO is the kind of plate that gets nodding approval at every red light from anyone who's ever walked into an ER as a patient.
Nurse power. Eight states. Six characters of pure professional pride. The plate for the nurse who runs a 12-hour shift, then runs an Iron Man on the weekend, then makes everyone else feel inadequate.
Surgeon. Four characters that immediately tell everyone in the parking garage who you are. Seven states. A power-move custom plate. The combination of "obviously a surgeon" and "obviously a fast car" is one of the most consistent demographic signals in American medicine.
Paramedic. Seven states. The personalized plate for the EMS professional who treats patients in the back of an ambulance at 3 AM and still has the energy to get this on their personal car. Wear the title proudly.
Dentist. Eight states. A clean six-character announcement that pairs especially well with whatever six-figure-ish car the average DDS drives to the practice every morning. Dentists love this plate. They also love their cars.
RN role model. Eight states. The plate for the nurse who precepts every new grad on the unit and still finds time to mentor pre-nursing students. The kind of person who makes the profession look possible.
PharmD. The doctorate-level pharmacy degree that turned the profession into a clinical specialty. Six states. Available for the pharmacist who has watched the field shift from "counting pills" to "managing medication therapy" and wants the badge to match.

What are some good vanity plate ideas for nurses?
The best vanity plate ideas for nurses reference the credential, the specialty, or the role. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, RNHERO, NURSPW (nurse power), RNROLE (RN role model), NURSLF (nurse life), and NURSLY are still available in multiple US states. The bare RN and NURSE plates are taken in every state we tested.
Can I get RN as a vanity plate?
No. Two-character vanity plates are extremely rare and almost always taken. RN is gone in every PlateHog-supported state. If you want a nursing-themed plate, you'll need at least 4–5 characters: RNHERO, RNROLE, NURSRN, or similar. PlateHog's April 2026 check found several still available.
Are 'custom plate', 'vanity plate', and 'personalized plate' different things?
No — they're three names for the same product. State DMVs differ on terminology (Texas: 'Personalized Plate'; California: 'Environmental License Plate'; Florida: 'Personalized Plates'), and nurses on r/nursing and physicians on r/medicine commonly call them 'custom plates' instead. Whichever phrase you searched to land on this page, every option below works the same way: the DMV reviews the alphanumeric combo you submit and either approves or rejects it.
What are some good vanity plate ideas for doctors?
Doctor vanity plate ideas usually reference a specialty (ONCLGY for oncology, ORTHMD for orthopedics, CARDIO for cardiology), a credential (PHARMD, DOCMD), or a role (SRGN for surgeon). MD and DOC are taken in every state we checked.
How much does a medical vanity plate cost?
Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV and are the same regardless of profession. They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 initial in California. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.
Are there special vanity plates for nurses or doctors?
Some states (notably Florida, Texas, and Maryland) offer specialty plates honoring nurses, EMTs, or healthcare workers — these are different from standard vanity plates and usually require proof of profession. The vanity plates listed in this article are standard personalized plates that anyone can apply for through their state DMV.
How do I check if a medical vanity plate is available?
Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea and PlateHog will run it against all 11 supported state DMVs in real time, returning live availability for each state.
