TL;DR
We've tested thousands of golf vanity plate ideas against live DMV systems across 11 US states. As of May 6, 2026, 8 of the best ones are still available right now. We grouped the survivors by theme and linked each one to a live availability check so you can grab whichever fits your state before someone else does.

There are roughly 25 million golfers in the United States, and golf custom plates are one of the highest-availability hobby categories we've ever checked. Why? Because golf-related plates spike around Father's Day and Christmas, get ordered as gifts, and most people never get around to it.
Vanity plates, custom plates, and personalized license plates all describe the same thing — a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combination. (DMV labels vary: most use 'Personalized Plate'; California uses 'Environmental License Plate'.) We pointed PlateHog's multi-state checker at every golf reference we could think of — scoring terms (birdie, eagle, albatross, bogey), hole numbers (1 through 19), club types (driver, putter, wedge), course traditions (Pebble Beach, Augusta, Sebring), and the universal 19th-hole culture every golfer gets.
The result: a surprising number of personalized plates are still wide open. Every plate below has a live availability link.
How we built this list
We compiled a list of thousands of candidate plates from r/golf, GolfWRX forums, and the dozens of golf Facebook groups we follow. Every scoring term, every club designation, every course reference, every traditional golf concept that fits in 7 characters or fewer.
Each plate was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on April 9, 2026. The plates featured below are the ones still available in at least one state — and there are a lot of them.
8 Golf Vanity Plates Still Available
Birdie. One under par. The most universally celebrated score in golf — and somehow still available in nine states. BIRDIE is the kind of personalized plate that makes everyone in the country club parking lot smile. Six characters of pure golf joy.
Albatross. Three under par on a single hole. The rarest score in regular golf — most golfers never make one. ALBTRZ is for the kind of golfer who has either made an albatross or is convinced they will any day now. Eight states.
Bogey-er. Eight states. The honest golfer plate. Most weekend players are bogey golfers — averaging one over par per hole — and they should celebrate that, not pretend they're scratch. BOGEYR is the most relatable golf plate possible.
Mulligan. The do-over shot you're absolutely allowed to take in friendly weekend rounds and absolutely not allowed to take in any tournament. Six states. The custom plate for the golfer who knows the rules and ignores them in service of having fun.
Fore! Eight states. The universal golf shout that means "I just hit a shot in your general direction, please duck." FRDORE is the plate for the golfer who hits enough errant shots to need it as a license plate.
Greens fee. Eight states. The amount you pay to play, which somehow always feels like "too much" until you're standing on the first tee. The plate for the golfer who calculates dollars-per-hole every round.
Fairway hit. Eight states. One of the four scoring stats that determines whether you played a good round or a frustrating one. The plate for the golfer who actually tracks their stats and is mostly happy with the FIR percentage.
Slicer. Eight states. The honest plate. About 80% of amateur golfers fight a slice (left-to-right ball flight for righties), and most of them give up trying to fix it. SLICR is for the golfer who has accepted reality and aims left of every fairway.

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

These plates are claimed in every state we checked. But here's the thing — plates change hands all the time. People sell cars, move states, let registrations lapse. Any of these could open up tomorrow.

What are some good vanity plate ideas for a golfer?
The best golf vanity plate ideas reference scoring terms, course traditions, or honest weekend-golfer self-deprecation. According to PlateHog's live DMV check on April 9, 2026, BIRDIE, ALBTRZ (albatross), BOGEYR, MULLGN (mulligan), FRDORE (fore!), GRNSFE (greens fee), FWAYHT (fairway hit), and SLICR are all still available in eight or nine US states.
Can I get GOLF as a vanity plate?
GOLF is taken in every PlateHog-supported state. It's also commonly claimed by VW Golf owners, not just golfers. If you want a golf-themed plate, you'll need a more specific reference: BIRDIE, BOGEYR, MULLGN, or any of the alternatives in this article.
What's the difference between a vanity plate, a custom plate, and a personalized plate?
There isn't one. All three are interchangeable terms for the same product — a state-issued plate where the driver picked the alphanumeric combination. State DMVs differ on the official label (most use 'Personalized Plate'; California uses 'Environmental License Plate'). On r/golf and GolfWRX, members use 'custom plate' and 'vanity plate' interchangeably. The PlateHog checker treats all three as synonyms because the application process is identical regardless of what your state calls it.
What does ALBTRZ mean on a license plate?
ALBTRZ is short for albatross — three strokes under par on a single hole. It's the rarest score in standard golf and is also called a 'double eagle' in the United States. Most amateur golfers never make one. Wearing it as a vanity plate is the kind of move that demands an explanation at every gas station you stop at.
How much does a golf-themed vanity plate cost?
Vanity plate fees are charged by the state DMV and are the same regardless of theme. They range from $10/year in Virginia to $103 initial in California. See the full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page.
Are golf vanity plates good gifts?
Yes — golf vanity plates are one of the most popular Father's Day, retirement, and milestone-birthday gifts. The trick is checking availability before you order. PlateHog's free multi-state checker shows live results across 11 states in seconds, and you can add taken plates to a watchlist if the recipient's first choice isn't currently available.
How do I check if a golf vanity plate is available?
Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea and PlateHog will run it against all 11 supported state DMVs in real time, returning live availability for each.
