Custom license plates — also called vanity plates or personalized license plates — are the small slab of stamped aluminum that turns your car into a billboard for whatever joke, brag, family name, or chassis-code reference you want to broadcast at every red light. Roughly 1 in 30 US drivers runs one, and the number ticks up every year as DMVs move their personalization portals online and the cost stays flat-to-cheap. The Specialty License Plate Fund in California alone clears tens of millions of dollars a year from custom plates, which tells you how much demand is sitting in the market — and how much competition there is for any plate worth wanting.
We get one question more than any other at PlateHog: "What does a custom plate actually cost, and is the one I want still available?" This guide answers both. We pulled the official 2026 fee schedules for all 11 states our checker covers, ran 120 candidate plates through every state's live DMV API, and stitched it together with the regulatory weirdness — character limits, banned-word lists, processing times, and the exact reason your application might come back rejected. Where the data conflicts with what a DMV agent told a forum poster five years ago, we trust the live API.
If you already know exactly what you want and just need to confirm it's free, skip the prose and use the PlateHog homepage checker — it queries 11 DMVs in parallel in about three seconds. If you're still browsing for inspiration, the plate cards below are all verified available as of May 2026, with direct links to the live availability page for each. We also kept a graveyard at the bottom of every plate that's already taken in every state we hit — useful for checking your assumptions before you spend two months on a DMV waitlist for nothing.
One terminology note before we dig in: "custom license plate," "vanity plate," "personalized plate," and "customized license plate" all refer to the same thing — letters and/or numbers you pick yourself, on a state-issued base plate. Different DMVs prefer different labels (California says "Environmental," New York says "custom," Pennsylvania says "personalized," Florida calls them "specialty personalized"), but the product is identical. We use the terms interchangeably throughout. If you came in searching "customized license plate" or "personalized license plate," the same advice applies.
How we built this list
Cost data was pulled directly from each state's official DMV fee schedule on April 28, 2026, cross-referenced against the live order portals listed in the table below. Where a state charges different fees for different base-plate designs (Texas has 300+ specialty designs at varying price points; Tennessee splits between standard and specialty bases), we list the standard vanity tier — specialty plates like sports-team or alma-mater designs cost more, sometimes much more. Renewal fees are listed separately because some states (Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kansas) roll the vanity surcharge into the standard annual registration while others (California, Virginia, New York, Maine) bill it separately every year.
Plate availability was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states (CA, FL, TX, VA, OH, NY, PA, TN, ME, WV, KS) on May 4, 2026. Every plate featured below was AVAILABLE in at least one state at test time. Availability changes by the hour — somebody could grab one of these between when we publish and when you read this — so each plate has a live verify link. We re-run the full sweep monthly and update the post; the timestamp in the header reflects the most recent check. If a plate shows as taken when you click through, scroll to the alternatives we suggest in each card description and try those next.
10 Custom Plates Vanity Plates Still Available
Wind horse. Nine states — among the highest availability we found on any custom plate in our database. The Mustang community claims it for the P-51 Mustang fighter reference, but the phrase works on anything from a horse trailer to a sailboat-towing F-150. A clean six-character vanity plate that reads as poetic without being precious.
Kilowatt-hours. The unit of energy every EV driver obsesses over. Nine-state availability puts this near the top of any personalized license plate ranking for EV owners — a Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, or Mach-E badge that quietly signals you understand what makes the car go without screaming the brand name. Pair it with a Plaid Model S and you have a complete look.
Birdie. The golf scoring term, the affectionate nickname, the tattoo idea every dad has briefly considered. Nine states. Of all the custom license plates a golf-loving driver could pick, this is the one that lands without overthinking — six letters, instant recognition, no awkward abbreviation.
Vette love. Six characters that say everything that needs saying. Nine states of availability — the most we found on any Corvette-coded vanity plate. If your garage has a Stingray in it and an LS-block thermos sitting next to your coffee maker, this is the personalized plate the universe is holding for you.
No way. Eight states. The custom plate that perfectly captures every reaction the rest of the road has to your driving. Pair it with literally any vehicle and the joke writes itself. Universally readable, never offensive enough to get rejected, and just clever enough that it earns a second look at parking-lot pickup.
Truck life. Nine states. The personalized plate for the guy whose F-150, Silverado, or Ram is also his weekend toolbox, ATV trailer, fishing boat tow rig, and second living room. Pickup ownership in America is a lifestyle, and this plate names it without resorting to a brand-trademark workaround the DMV would block.
Army National Guard. Eight states of availability — a huge surprise given how heavily veterans hunt for service-branch plates. ARNGRD threads the needle between the trademark-blocked USARMY/USAF/USMC plates and a generic VET plate. The custom license plate equivalent of wearing your unit patch on a hat: present, dignified, never loud.
Pushrod. Eight states. The two-syllable answer to every "why doesn't GM use overhead cams?" debate online — and the cleanest available custom plate for owners of a small-block-powered Corvette, Camaro, Silverado, or 80s GMC. PUSHRD has the rare quality of being both a flex and an inside joke at the same time.
Eco-friendly. The original reason most EV buyers thought they were going electric — until they found Insane mode and forgot the planet entirely. Seven states. ECOFRI is the personalized plate that lets a Prius, Leaf, or Niro EV driver wear their values without lecturing the entire parking lot about it.
Megawatt. One million watts. A perfect car-nerd brag for anyone who owns a long-range EV, runs solar panels at home, or actually understands what a megawatt means in a Tesla Powerwall context. Eight states. Among the most underrated custom license plates in our database — gets read on instinct by other EV owners, totally invisible to everyone else.

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

What is a custom license plate?
A custom license plate (also called a vanity plate or personalized license plate) is a state-issued license plate where you choose the letters and/or numbers instead of accepting the random sequence the DMV would assign. Most US states allow 2 to 7 alphanumeric characters; New York permits up to 8. The plate is registered to your specific vehicle and your specific name, just like a standard plate, and it must clear the state's banned-word and trademark filters before approval. Once issued, the sequence is yours for as long as you keep paying the annual renewal fee — the DMV will not reassign it to someone else even after you sell the car, as long as you transfer the plate or formally surrender it.
How much does a custom license plate cost?
Custom license plate fees vary widely by state. As of May 2026, Virginia is the cheapest at $10 per year and California is the most expensive at $103 for the initial issuance ($83 annual renewal). Most states fall between $25 and $75, with annual renewals either rolled into your standard registration or charged as a small add-on. Texas, Florida, and Tennessee charge more for premium specialty designs (military, college, environmental). See the state-by-state cost table earlier on this page for the complete fee schedule, or read our dedicated cost guide for a deeper breakdown of every state's pricing tiers and processing fees.
How do I check if a custom license plate is available?
The fastest way to check custom license plate availability is to use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog, which queries every supported state DMV in real time and returns results in about three seconds. You can also check on each state's individual DMV site, but that means logging in and running 11 separate searches by hand. PlateHog supports CA, FL, TX, VA, OH, NY, PA, TN, ME, WV, and KS as of May 2026, and we add new state adapters as DMV systems become accessible. If your state isn't covered yet, the official state DMV portal is the authoritative source.
What are the rules for custom license plates?
Most states limit custom plates to 2–7 alphanumeric characters (letters A–Z and digits 0–9). New York allows up to 8. Spaces and hyphens are typically rendered as a half-step, not a separate character. DMVs reject plates that contain profanity, drug references, sexual content, gang signs, references to violence, religious slurs, government-impersonation strings (like NOTACOP or CIA), or registered trademarks (TESLA, MUSTANG, SHELBY, FERRARI). Each state maintains its own banned-words list and reviews every personalized plate application by hand or by automated filter.
How long does it take to get a custom license plate?
Processing times for personalized license plates range from 2 to 12 weeks depending on the state. Florida, Tennessee, and Ohio are the fastest at 2–4 weeks. New York, Virginia, Maine, and West Virginia are mid-tier at 4–6 weeks. California is the slowest by a wide margin at 8–12 weeks for initial issuance, mostly because the Environmental License Plate program is hand-reviewed and the fund supports state environmental programs. If your state offers expedited processing, expect to pay an extra $20–$50 to cut the wait roughly in half. Most states will mail you a temporary registration tag to use in the meantime so you stay legal on the road.
Can I get a trademarked word like TESLA or FERRARI on my custom plate?
No. Most state DMVs cross-reference vanity plate applications against the USPTO trademark database and reject anything that matches a registered brand name. TESLA, FERRARI, PORSCHE, MUSTANG, SHELBY, RAPTOR, and BULLITT are all blocked in the majority of US states. The standard workaround is a single-character variant — PPLAID instead of PLAID, MSTNGR instead of MUSTANG, FERRRI instead of FERRARI — that drops, doubles, or substitutes one letter so it no longer matches the trademark on file. The DMV reviewer will usually approve these because they're not exact matches, but expect a higher rejection rate the closer you sail to the trademarked spelling.
Can two cars in the same state have the same custom plate?
No. Custom license plate sequences are unique within each state — once someone in California claims KWHRZ, no other California driver can register that exact sequence on a passenger plate until the original holder gives it up. The same sequence can exist simultaneously in different states (KWHRZ is currently registered in 9 of our 11 supported states), which is why PlateHog checks every state in parallel. The same sequence can also exist on a different plate type within the same state — for example, a passenger vanity and a motorcycle vanity can share letters, since they're stamped on different base plates with different background designs.
What happens to my custom plate if I sell my car?
When you sell or trade in a vehicle, you have three options for your personalized license plate. You can transfer the plate to your replacement vehicle (most states allow this for free or for a small $5–$15 transfer fee). You can surrender the plate back to the DMV, which releases the sequence for someone else to claim. Or you can keep the plate "on hold" with the DMV for up to 90 days while you wait to put it on a new car — this prevents the sequence from being released to anyone else, but you usually have to keep paying renewal fees during the hold period.
