New York is the only state in PlateHog's coverage that allows up to 8 characters on a personalized license plate — one more than every other state. That extra character opens up combinations that simply don't fit anywhere else: 'BUSDRVR8', 'NYC10024', 'BROOKLYN', '8FIGURES'. New York custom license plates (the DMV's official term is 'custom plate', and most New Yorkers also use 'vanity plate' or 'personalized plate' interchangeably) ride on the gold-on-white Excelsior base introduced in 2020, which replaced the older gold-on-blue Empire base after a contentious legislative reissue process.
The NY DMV charges $60 for the initial custom plate plus $31.25 for annual renewal — middle-of-the-pack for personalized plates nationally, but that 8-character limit makes the value proposition more interesting than the raw cost suggests. New York processes tens of thousands of vanity plate applications a year, and the DMV uses a two-stage review (automated banned-word screening followed by human review for borderline cases) that doesn't publish a public banned-word list. Rejection patterns are predictable: no profanity, drug references, sexual content, references to violence, or government impersonation.
We pointed PlateHog's multi-state DMV checker at 70 New York-relevant plate candidates pulled from r/NewYork, r/asknyc, the Tesla Owners Club New York chapter, the Long Island Mustang Club, and the kind of NYC-and-upstate cultural references only New Yorkers say out loud. Every plate ran live against the New York DMV's availability checker on May 6, 2026. The 12 below came back AVAILABLE in New York (often plus several other states). Each card links to a fresh availability check on dmv.ny.gov.
If your first choice isn't available, don't give up. New York custom plate inventory turns over constantly — people sell cars, move to New Jersey or Connecticut, or upgrade plates after a surname change. PlateHog's free watchlist will email you the moment any plate you want flips back to available. Drop your dream NY personalized license plate text into the watchlist and we'll do the monitoring 24/7.
How we built this list
Our New York candidate list came from r/NewYork, r/asknyc, the Tesla Owners Club New York, the Long Island Mustang Club, the C7 Corvette NY owners group, and our own brainstorms with friends who've held New York custom plates through multiple registration cycles. The list emphasized car-themed plates that fit NY's strict alphanumeric rules, broad lifestyle plates (golf, military, medical), and 7-character options — we deliberately avoided 8-character entries to keep cross-state comparison clean, even though NY is the only state that supports that length.
Every candidate was tested through PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states (New York included) on May 6, 2026. The plates featured below came back AVAILABLE in New York and at least one other state during our run. The NY DMV's availability data refreshes frequently, so each plate card includes a direct link to a fresh dmv.ny.gov check — verify before you submit, because NY's two-stage content review still applies on top of availability, and the DMV does not publish a public banned-word list.
12 New York Vanity Plates Still Available

Megawatt. One million watts. The unit Tesla Energy talks about in its Megapack pitches and the theoretical max draw of a V4 Supercharger. With Tesla's growing Northeast Supercharger buildout and the active New York EV community, MEGWAT is the kind of New York custom license plate that signals deep EV literacy without saying anything obvious. Eight states.

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

How much does a custom license plate cost in New York?
A New York custom license plate costs $60 for the initial issuance plus $31.25 per year for renewal — middle-of-the-pack for personalized plates nationally. The fee is paid through the New York DMV's online custom plates portal at dmv.ny.gov. Specialty New York plate base designs (university plates, military plates, conservation plates) add separate surcharges that fund their partner programs on top of the personalization fee.
How long does a New York vanity plate take?
After your custom plate text is approved, expect 4 to 6 weeks for production and delivery from the New York DMV. Approval itself is usually within a few business days. The DMV uses a two-stage review (automated banned-word screening followed by human review for borderline cases) and does not publish a public banned-word list. If denied, you receive a refund minus a small processing fee and you can reapply with a different combination.
What characters are allowed on a New York custom plate?
New York custom plates allow letters A-Z and numbers 0-9 only — no spaces, hyphens, ampersands, or special symbols. The minimum length is 2 characters and the maximum is 8 — one more than every other state PlateHog covers. The 8-character limit was made possible by the tighter spacing of the Excelsior plate base introduced in 2020. That extra character opens up combinations that simply don't fit on other state plates: BROOKLYN, NYC10024, BUSDRVR8.
Can I check New York custom plate availability online?
Yes. PlateHog's New York adapter checks plate availability through the same source the NY DMV uses, returning results in under two seconds. You can also check directly at dmv.ny.gov, but PlateHog is typically faster during peak hours and lets you see whether the same plate is open in 10 other states at the same time. Both tools return identical New York availability data.
Can I get an 8-character vanity plate in New York?
Yes. New York is the only state PlateHog covers that allows 8-character custom plates. The 8-character limit was made possible by the tighter character spacing on the Excelsior plate base introduced in 2020. Combinations like BROOKLYN, BUSDRVR8, MOMOF4NY, or NYC10024 all fit on a New York custom license plate but won't fit anywhere else. Most state DMVs cap at 7 characters because their plate-stamping machines are calibrated to the older 7-character grid.
What's the difference between a vanity plate and a personalized plate in New York?
Functionally none — both terms refer to the same New York custom license plate product. The New York DMV uses 'custom plate' as the official term in its forms and online portal, but most New York drivers and online listings call them vanity plates or personalized plates. All terms refer to a 2-to-8 character alphanumeric plate ordered through dmv.ny.gov on the gold-on-white Excelsior base or one of dozens of specialty designs.
What is the Excelsior plate?
The Excelsior plate is the gold-on-white New York DMV base design introduced in 2020, replacing the older gold-on-blue Empire base after a contentious legislative reissue. The Excelsior name comes from New York's state motto ('Excelsior' means 'ever upward' in Latin). The new base design has tighter character spacing, which is why New York custom plates can run up to 8 characters where most state plates max out at 7.
