All plates verified available as of May 2026 via real-time DMV checks

Custom license plate ideas are the highest-volume search query on the entire vanity plate internet, and the reason is obvious: most people don't know what they want until they see something good. The blank "enter your plate" box on a state DMV portal is the personalized license plate equivalent of staring at a Google Doc cursor at 11pm with a deadline tomorrow. You need a starting point.

We've been collecting and live-testing custom plate ideas across 11 state DMVs for the better part of two years through PlateHog's research arm, and this post is the curated greatest-hits — the ideas that landed, that cleared review, and that were still available the morning we published. Tesla plates, Mustang plates, golf plates, military plates, dad jokes, EV puns, family names abbreviated to seven characters: every category, every angle, all verified.

Every plate card below was re-tested on May 4, 2026 and confirmed AVAILABLE in at least one state. We linked each plate directly to its live availability page so you can verify before you order. If something gets sniped between now and when you read this, scroll to the alternatives in each card — we suggest 2–3 backup plates per category in the description text.

One housekeeping note: this post is intentionally cross-category. If you're hunting for a Tesla-specific list, see our Tesla vanity plates post. If you want golf, see the golf list. The whole point of this idea-bank is to expose you to angles you might not have considered — sometimes the best custom plate for your Mustang is a dad joke that has nothing to do with Ford. Personalized license plates are personality plates first, brand badges second.

How we built this list

We pulled candidate plates from every PlateHog blog post (Tesla, Mustang, Corvette, Jeep, Truck, Golf, Military, Medical, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Funny) plus our internal idea database — about 11,000 vanity plate candidates collected from Reddit threads, forum posts, FOIA datasets of approved DMV plates, and our own brainstorming. Each candidate was filtered for the qualities that make a custom license plate idea worth surfacing: clean readability at 50mph, no trademark conflict, no banned-words risk, and at least one current US state with availability.

The 10 plate ideas featured below were selected for category diversity (EVs, muscle, sports, military, professions, humor) and were re-tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on May 4, 2026. Every plate was AVAILABLE in at least one state at test time, with most available in 6+ states. We picked the best-of-each-category rather than the most-available — sometimes a 4-state plate has more personality than a 9-state generic.

Plaid mode. The Tesla trim level that turns a Model S into a 1,020-horsepower sleeper that humiliates supercars in 2.1 seconds. PPLAID is the cleanest possible workaround to the trademark-blocked PLAID — and one of the most coveted EV-themed personalized plate ideas in our database. Available in four states including California, which is essentially Plaid HQ. This one will not survive the week.

Wind horse. Nine states — among the highest availability we've found on any custom plate idea. The Mustang community claims it for the P-51 Mustang fighter reference, but it works on anything from a horse trailer to a Subaru with a kayak rack on top. A clean six-character vanity plate that reads as poetic without being precious about it.

Birdie. Nine states. The golf-scoring plate that doubles as a term of endearment, doubles again as a vague-enough word to get past every DMV banned-list filter we've tested. The custom license plate idea for the dad whose Saturday plans include 36 holes and a Bloody Mary at the turn — and who would never put GOLFER on a plate because that's been gone since 2003.

I see you driver. Eight states. The custom plate idea that lets you communicate with the tailgater in your rearview without rolling down the window. Subtle enough that they'll have to read it twice, sharp enough that they'll definitely back off. We've seen this one move through five states' DMV reviews without a single rejection.

Army National Guard. Eight states. Among the most underrated personalized plate ideas in our military-themed bank — threads the needle between the trademark-blocked USARMY/USAF/USMC plates (which most state DMVs won't approve) and a generic VET plate. ARNGRD is what current and former Guard members put on their daily drivers when they want recognition without needing every passerby to ask which branch.

Vette love. Nine states. The Corvette community's holy grail of custom license plate ideas — six characters, instantly readable, totally trademark-clean. Pair it with any C5/C6/C7/C8 and it's a complete look. We've watched VETLOV bounce between availability and taken in California for two years; it's currently free as of May 2026.

TRCKLF
CA — CaliforniaFL — FloridaVA — VirginiaOH — OhioNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Truck life. Nine states. The personalized plate idea for any pickup owner who treats their F-150, Silverado, or Ram as the second living room of their life. We've seen TRCKLF on lifted Tundras, stock Mavericks, and absurdly clean 1990s C/K trucks with show-quality paint. Universal across the truck spectrum, which is rare for any custom plate.

FLORIDA
FASTNF

Fast enough. Seven states. The honest custom plate idea — most cars are fast enough; your daily-driver Camry is fast enough; your wife's CR-V is fast enough; your minivan is, against all reason, fast enough. FASTNF is a quiet rebuke to the entire horsepower-obsessed corner of car culture, which makes it the ideal personalized plate for someone whose ego doesn't require external validation from strangers in parking lots.

MEGWAT
CA — CaliforniaFL — FloridaVA — VirginiaNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Megawatt. One million watts. Eight states. The custom license plate idea for any EV owner who's tired of the obvious EV plates (KWHRZ, JOLTD, AMPLFY) being claimed in every state. MEGWAT scales the unit up by 1,000x, signals technical competence, and reads as a flex without being one. The car-nerd plate other car nerds quietly respect.

FLORIDA
ALBTRZ
FL — FloridaVA — VirginiaOH — OhioNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Albatross — golf scoring term for three under par on a single hole, the rarest scoring outcome in golf. Eight states. ALBTRZ is the kind of personalized license plate idea that flies under the radar of casual readers and lights up every other golfer in the parking lot at the country club. Niche, technical, perfect.

How to check if a vanity plate is available

The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:

  1. 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
  2. 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
  3. 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.

How to actually order a vanity plate

Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good custom license plate ideas?

The best custom license plate ideas play on a personal hobby, profession, vehicle make, or inside joke — short enough to read at speed, clean enough to clear DMV review. According to PlateHog's live multi-state DMV check on May 4, 2026, WNDHRS, BIRDIE, VETLOV, TRCKLF, MEGWAT, PPLAID, and ICUDVR are all still available in multiple US states. Generic plates like COOL, FUNNY, and IDEAS are taken in every state we tested. The plates that survive the longest are 5–7 character abbreviations of compound words — they fit the DMV's character limit, dodge the trademark filter, and don't get sniped by every random driver who searched the obvious term.

What's the most popular custom license plate idea?

There's no official ranking, but PlateHog's data shows the highest-search categories are EV-themed plates (Tesla owners, Rivian, Lucid, Mach-E), muscle car plates (Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Charger), professional identity plates (RN, MD, EMT, USMC variants), and family-name plates (DAD-OF-3, MOM-LIFE, abbreviated kid names). The single most-searched specific plate idea on PlateHog in 2025–2026 was variants of TESLA — most of which are trademark-blocked.

How do I come up with a custom license plate idea?

The fastest way to brainstorm a personalized license plate is to write down 10 things you love (sport, hobby, profession, car, kid, dog, music, food) and abbreviate each one to 5–7 characters. Drop vowels first (BIRDIE → BRDIE), then drop consonants (BIRDIE → BRDE if you're really tight on space), then try doubling letters (PLAID → PPLAID) to dodge trademark filters. Run each candidate through a multi-state checker like PlateHog before committing.

Are short custom license plates better?

Shorter custom plates are more readable and feel more iconic — but they're also far harder to get because every 2–4 character vanity sequence in the US has been claimed for years. Three-character vanities are essentially impossible to find available in any state we cover (LOL, WTF, MD, RN, TJ, ER are all gone everywhere). The sweet spot for vanity plate ideas in 2026 is 5–7 characters, where the available combinations are still vast and creative.

What custom license plate ideas should I avoid?

Avoid trademarked brand names (TESLA, MUSTANG, FERRARI, SHELBY, RAPTOR, BULLITT — all blocked in most states), profanity in any language (DMVs check Spanish, French, German, and slang), drug references (420, KUSH, HIGH, BLZD), sexual innuendo (most state filters catch even creative attempts), references to law enforcement impersonation (NOTACOP, FAKEFBI), and gang signs. Any of these will get your application rejected and you'll usually lose the application fee.

Can I copy a custom license plate idea I saw on Instagram?

Yes, as long as the plate isn't currently registered in your state. Custom license plate sequences are state-specific — if you saw a great plate idea on a California car, the exact same sequence may still be available in Texas, Florida, Virginia, or any other state. PlateHog runs all 11 supported states in parallel, so you can check the exact plate from the Instagram photo against every state DMV in three seconds. Many viral plate ideas on social media are still free in 7+ states.

How do I check if my custom license plate idea is taken?

Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog to verify availability across every state DMV in real time. The check is free, no account required, and returns results in about three seconds. PlateHog's database also surfaces "trending" plates (sequences other users have searched recently) and a graveyard of taken plates with notes on which states have them registered. If a sequence is taken in your state, the alternatives engine suggests close-variant ideas you can try instead.

What's the difference between a custom plate, a vanity plate, and a personalized plate?

Nothing — they're three names for the same product. "Custom license plate," "vanity plate," and "personalized license plate" all refer to a state-issued license plate where you choose the letters and numbers instead of taking the random sequence the DMV would assign. Different state DMVs prefer different labels on their websites (California: Environmental Personalized; New York: Custom Plate; Pennsylvania: Personalized Plate; Florida: Specialty Personalized), but every state's portal is selling the same thing. Don't get tripped up by the terminology — search whichever phrase your state uses.
