California has more registered vehicles than any other state — about 31 million of them — and one of the most active vanity-plate cultures in the country. The combination is brutal for anyone trying to claim a custom license plate. California custom license plates (also called personalized plates or vanity plates by the California DMV) are the same product across all three names: a 2-to-7 character alphanumeric plate that you choose instead of accepting a randomly assigned combination.
Order a California custom license plate and you're applying through the DMV's Environmental License Plate program at dmv.ca.gov. Every dollar of the fee goes to the Environmental License Plate Fund, which has poured roughly $400 million into California air-quality, coastal-conservation, and endangered-species programs since the 1970s. That's the upside. The downside: every short, obvious combination — TESLA, BEACHY, SOCAL, LA, BAY — was claimed before most of the people reading this article had a driver's license.
We pointed PlateHog's real-time California DMV checker at 75 candidate plates pulled from car forums, Reddit threads, beach culture, EV culture, and the kind of West Coast-isms only Californians say out loud. Every plate ran live against the CA DMV's session-based availability API on May 6, 2026. The 12 below came back as AVAILABLE in California. Each card links to a fresh check so you can re-verify before you apply.
If your first choice is taken, don't give up. California custom plate inventory turns over constantly as people sell cars, move out of state, or let registrations lapse. PlateHog's free watchlist will email you the moment any plate you want flips back to available — so you can grab it before the next person reading this guide does.
How we built this list
Our candidate list came from r/California, r/TeslaMotors, r/Mustang, the Tesla Owners Club California chapter, golf and outdoor forums, and our own brainstorming sessions with friends who've owned California plates for over a decade. The list covered car-themed plates (model nicknames, engine codes, EV puns), lifestyle plates (Pacific Coast culture, surf/golf references, profession identifiers), and the kind of niche-but-readable combinations the California vanity-plate community has been mining for 50 years.
Every candidate was tested through PlateHog's California DMV adapter on May 6, 2026. The CA DMV's vanity plate system uses a session-based HTTP API that returns the same availability data shown on the dmv.ca.gov public checker — we just query it programmatically and cache results for 30 minutes. The plates featured below all came back AVAILABLE in California as of that morning. Each card links to a live re-check so you can confirm before you submit a $50 application that the DMV may end up rejecting for content reasons separate from availability.
12 California Vanity Plates Still Available
Plaid mode. The trim that turns a Model S into a 1,020-horsepower sleeper that humiliates supercars in 2.1 seconds. PPLAID is a clean six-character workaround for the trademark-blocked PLAID — and it's still sitting in the California DMV. California is basically Plaid HQ. This particular custom California plate will not survive the week.
Wind horse. The Mustang's name was supposedly inspired by both the P-51 fighter plane and the wild horse symbol. WNDHRS captures both vibes in six characters and is a gorgeous California custom license plate option — currently available in nine states including CA. If you're driving a Coyote V8 down PCH at sunset, this is your plate.
Vette love. Six characters that say everything that needs saying. VETLOV is open in nine states, California included. The kind of California personalized plate that turns the Cars and Coffee parking lot at Newport Beach into a conversation. If your garage has a Corvette and an LS thermos sitting next to your espresso machine, this is your plate.
EcoBoost. The 2.3L turbo four-cylinder Mustang that V8 purists love to dunk on — and the one that's actually outsold the GT for the last decade. Available in California and six other states. Wear the EcoBoost badge proudly on your custom license plate. The internet is wrong about this car.
Birdie. One under par. The most universally celebrated score in golf — and somehow still available as a California custom plate. With over 1,000 golf courses in California, BIRDIE is the kind of vanity license plate that earns nods from every Pebble Beach pilgrim and every weekend hacker at the local muni.
Pushrod. The two-syllable answer to every "why doesn't GM use overhead cams?" debate. The pushrod LS/LT V8 made the C5/C6/C7 the bargain supercars they are. Eight states still have PUSHRD, including California, which has more LS-swap shops per square mile than anywhere else on Earth. A perfect California vanity license plate for the 5.7L crowd.
Dirt road. Six characters that perfectly describe what a Jeep is built for, and what California's BLM land actually offers — Anza-Borrego, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, the high Sierra. DRTRTE is open in nine states including California. If you've ever taken a Wrangler off pavement on a Saturday morning, this California custom license plate has your name on it.
Truck life. Six characters, nine states. Works on any pickup, any brand, any year, any region — but reads especially well on a California custom license plate strapped to a lifted F-150 in the Antelope Valley or a clean OBS Chevy in the Central Valley.
Oncology. The medical specialty dealing with cancer diagnosis and treatment — and one of the most demanding fields in medicine. ONCLGY is still available as a California personalized plate in nine states. With UCLA, UCSF, Stanford, and the City of Hope all anchored in California, this is a quietly powerful custom license plate for any oncologist or oncology nurse.
Luxury Mercedes-Benz. Five characters, nine states — clean enough to suit anything from a C300 to an S580 Maybach. California has more Mercedes-Benz dealerships than any other state, and LUXMB is the kind of restrained, classy vanity plate that ages well across a decade of Beverly Hills pickups.
Veteran now. Eight states. The custom California plate for the recently transitioned service member who's still adjusting to civilian life and wants to make sure everyone knows the uniform may be off but the service stays. Pair it with the California Veteran specialty plate base if you qualify — the personalization carries over.
Megawatt. One million watts. The unit Tesla Energy talks about in its Megapack pitches and the theoretical max draw of a V4 Supercharger. With more Tesla Energy installations and more Superchargers in California than any other state, MEGWAT is the kind of California custom license plate that signals deep EV literacy without saying anything obvious.

How to check if a vanity plate is available
The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:
- 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
- 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
- 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.
How to actually order a vanity plate
Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

How much does a custom license plate cost in California?
A California custom license plate costs $50 for the initial issuance and $40 per year for renewal, paid to the California DMV. The fees go to the Environmental License Plate Fund, which has poured roughly $400 million into California air-quality, coastal-conservation, and endangered-species programs since the 1970s. Specialty designs (Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Whale Tail) cost extra on top of the personalization fee.
How long does a California vanity plate take to arrive?
Once the California DMV approves your application, plate production and delivery typically take 4 to 6 weeks. Approval itself is usually within a few business days. The application can still be denied for content reasons (profanity, drug references, gang references, government impersonation) even after the DMV charges the $50 fee. If denied, you receive a refund minus a small processing fee and you can reapply with a different combination.
What characters are allowed on a California custom license plate?
California vanity plates allow letters A-Z and numbers 0-9 only — no spaces, hyphens, ampersands, or special symbols. The minimum length is 2 characters and the maximum is 7. The CA DMV automatically replaces the digit 0 with the letter O during processing because the two are visually identical on a stamped plate. All plates in this guide fit those rules and were tested with the same character constraints the DMV uses.
Can I check California custom plate availability online?
Yes. PlateHog's California adapter queries the live CA DMV availability API in real time and returns results in under two seconds — the same data the dmv.ca.gov public checker uses, just faster. You can also check directly at dmv.ca.gov by clicking through to the IPP (Individualized Plate Program) portal. PlateHog is the faster path because it lets you check the same plate against the other 10 states we cover at the same time, in case you're flexible on registration.
What's the difference between a vanity plate and a personalized plate in California?
There is no functional difference. The California DMV uses 'personalized plate' as the official term in its forms (REG 17 and the IPP portal), but California drivers and most online listings call them vanity plates or custom license plates. All three terms refer to the same Environmental License Plate product — a 2-to-7 character alphanumeric plate that you choose, ordered through the IPP program at dmv.ca.gov.
Why does the California DMV reject so many custom license plate applications?
The CA DMV runs a multi-stage review on every application: an automated profanity filter, a manual reviewer, and a final committee for borderline cases. Plates are denied for vulgarity, drug or gang references, sexual content, racial slurs, references to violence, and combinations that resemble government or law-enforcement plates. California publishes its full rejected-plate list under the Public Records Act — PlateHog's Hall of Shame indexes thousands of CA rejections so you can see what doesn't fly before you apply.
Can I transfer my California custom plate to a new car?
Yes. California allows you to transfer a personalized plate to any vehicle you own using a REG 17 form, and you can also retain the plate (without a vehicle) for up to two years if you sell your car before buying the next one. The transfer fee is small — usually $20 — and the plate keeps its original character configuration so you don't have to reapply.
