All plates verified available as of May 2026 via real-time DMV checks

California has more Teslas per capita than any other state. The Bay Area is Tesla's spiritual home, LA is its biggest market, and Mulholland Drive on a Sunday morning looks like a Plaid Mode showroom. Which is exactly why every obvious Tesla custom plate (TESLA, MODEL3, PLAID, ELON) has been claimed at the California DMV for years.

California's DMV calls these 'Environmental License Plates' — but vanity plates, custom plates, and personalized license plates all describe the exact same thing: a state-issued plate where the owner picked the alphanumeric combination. We pointed PlateHog's California DMV adapter at every Tesla angle we could think of — Plaid mode, Ludicrous mode, electric puns, kilowatt brags, eco-friendly references — and tested them in real time against the live CA DMV system.

These 8 Tesla-themed personalized plates came back AVAILABLE in California as of April 10, 2026. Every one links to a live availability check so you can verify before you head to the DMV — and if you don't move quickly, the next Bay Area Tesla owner reading this article will.

How we built this list

We compiled 75 Tesla-related vanity plate candidates from r/TeslaMotors, the TeslaMotorsClub forums, the Tesla Owners Club California chapter, and our own research. The list covered every model (S, 3, X, Y, Cybertruck), every trim (Performance, Long Range, Plaid), every powertrain reference (kWh, MWh, lithium, regen), and every meme that's become Tesla-community shorthand.

Then we ran every plate through PlateHog's real-time California DMV adapter on April 10, 2026. The CA DMV vanity plate system uses a session-based HTTP API that returns live availability data — the same data the dmv.ca.gov public checker uses, just queried programmatically. The 8 plates featured below are the ones that came back AVAILABLE in California as of that morning. Each card links to a fresh availability check so you can re-verify the result yourself before applying.

PPLAID
CA — California

Plaid mode. The trim level that turns a Model S into a 1,020-horsepower sleeper that humiliates supercars in 2.1 seconds. PPLAID is a six-character workaround for the trademark-blocked PLAID — and it's somehow still sitting in the California DMV. California is basically Plaid HQ. This one will not survive the week.

KWHRZ
CA — California

Kilowatt-hours, the unit of energy every Tesla owner obsesses over. KWHRZ is the EV equivalent of a horsepower brag — except instead of pretending you have 700 hp, you're flexing about how efficient your battery management is. Available in California right now. Whoever sees it in traffic will either nod knowingly or have absolutely no idea what it means. That's the perfect ratio.

MEGWAT
CA — California

Megawatt. One million watts — the unit of power Tesla Energy uses for its Megapack utility-scale storage and the theoretical max draw of a V4 Supercharger. MEGWAT is the kind of plate only a real Tesla nerd will appreciate, which is the entire point of a vanity plate. California has it. Go.

LDCRSS
CA — California

Ludicrous mode. The original Tesla insanity setting before Plaid existed. Ludicrous launched the first wave of "my electric sedan beats your supercar" YouTube videos, and it's still the trim badge that older Model S P90D and P100D owners proudly defend. LDCRSS is sitting in the California DMV right now. Won't be around long.

ZEROMN
CA — California

Zero emissions. The original Tesla pitch before the Insane / Ludicrous / Plaid horsepower escalation made everyone forget about the planet. ZEROMN is the custom plate for the Tesla owner who actually bought the car for the climate angle and not just because it goes 0–60 in 2.1 seconds. (Or both. Both is fine.)

JOLTD
CA — California

Jolted. Past-tense electric shock as a license plate, which is approximately what your passenger feels when you stab the throttle in a Model S Plaid for the first time. JOLTD is available in California — perfect for a Bay Area commute or a Sunday canyon run.

ECOFRI

Eco-friendly. The original reason most people thought they were buying a Tesla — until they discovered Insane mode and forgot the planet entirely. Wear the eco label, drive it like you stole it. ECOFRI is open as a personalized plate at the CA DMV right now.

The other Ludicrous abbreviation, in case LDCRSS gets sniped before you read this. Same energy, different syllable count. Owning either is the closest a license plate can get to a personality disorder diagnosis — in the best possible way.

How to check if a vanity plate is available

The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:

  1. 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
  2. 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
  3. 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.

How to actually order a vanity plate

Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Tesla vanity plate ideas for California?

According to PlateHog's live California DMV check on April 10, 2026, the best Tesla vanity plates still available in California are PPLAID (Plaid mode), KWHRZ (kilowatt hours), MEGWAT (megawatt), LDCRSS (Ludicrous), ZEROMN (zero emissions), JOLTD, ECOFRI, and LUDICR. The trademarked plates TESLA, PLAID, MODEL3, and ROADSTR are blocked or taken at the California DMV.

Can I get TESLA as a vanity plate in California?

No. Tesla is a registered trademark, and the California DMV automatically rejects vanity plate applications containing trademarked brand names. The same restriction applies to PLAID, ROADSTR, MODEL3, and CYBRTRK. To get a Tesla-themed plate in California, you need a creative variant like PPLAID, TESLOV, or TSLAFN that doesn't trip the trademark filter.

What's the difference between custom, vanity, and personalized license plates in California?

There's no functional difference — Californians and the CA DMV use 'custom plate', 'vanity plate', and 'personalized license plate' interchangeably for the same product. The DMV's official program name is the 'Environmental License Plate' (ELP), and the form is REG 17. Other states use their own names (Texas: 'Personalized Plates'; New York: 'Personalized Plates'), but the concept is identical: you pick the letters and numbers, the DMV reviews them, and if approved, you get the plate.

How much does a vanity plate cost in California?

California Environmental License Plates (the standard vanity plate type) cost $103 for the initial issuance and $83 per year for renewal. The fee goes to the California Environmental License Plate Fund, which supports state environmental programs. You can apply online at dmv.ca.gov or by mail using REG 17 form.

How many characters can a California vanity plate have?

California vanity plates can have between 2 and 7 characters — letters, numbers, and a single space or half-space. No special characters, no symbols. The CA DMV is also the only state that allows a single literal half-space between characters. All Tesla plates in this guide fit within the 7-character limit.

How long does it take to get a vanity plate in California?

Once your application is approved, the California DMV typically takes 8 to 12 weeks to manufacture and mail your personalized plate. Approval itself is usually within a few business days. You can track the status of your application through the dmv.ca.gov account portal.

How do I check if a Tesla vanity plate is available in California?

Use a multi-state vanity plate checker like PlateHog. Type your plate idea (2–7 alphanumeric characters), and PlateHog will hit the live California DMV API and return availability in seconds. The data is identical to what you'd see on the dmv.ca.gov public checker — just much faster, and you can check multiple states at the same time if you're flexible on registration.

Why are most Tesla vanity plates already taken in California?

California has the highest Tesla ownership density of any US state — roughly 40% of all US Teslas are registered in California, according to multiple state DMV registration datasets. The combination of high Tesla density and the active vanity-plate culture among Bay Area and LA Tesla owners means the obvious plates (TESLA, MODEL3, PLAID) were claimed within months of each car's release.
