How much does a custom license plate cost? The honest answer is "between $10 and $103, depending on what state you live in and what base plate design you pick." Vanity plate fees in the US are set by each state DMV individually — there's no federal standard — and the spread is wider than most drivers realize. Virginia charges $10 per year for any personalized plate, full stop. California charges $103 for the initial issuance and another $83 every year after that. The same six-character plate sequence can cost ten times more in California than in Virginia, with no difference in the actual product.
We pulled the official 2026 fee schedules for all 11 states PlateHog covers, cross-referenced against each DMV's live order portal, and put it all in the comparison table further down this page. We also priced out the renewal economics — some states roll the vanity surcharge into your standard registration (so the cost feels invisible after year one), while others bill it separately every renewal cycle. If you keep a personalized plate for 10 years, the total cost difference between the cheapest and most expensive states is over $900.
This guide answers every variant of the cost question we see in PlateHog support tickets: "how much for a custom license plate?" "how much does a personalized license plate cost?" "how much is a vanity plate in [state]?" Same product, same answer, different framing. We use "custom license plate," "vanity plate," and "personalized plate" interchangeably throughout — every US state DMV does the same.
One important note: the cost figures below are for standard vanity plates on the default base design. Specialty designs (military, college alumni, sports team, environmental) almost always cost more — sometimes a lot more. Texas alone offers 300+ specialty designs ranging from $30 to $195 each. We flag the major specialty premiums in the FAQ at the bottom, but if you want the cheapest possible custom plate, stick to the standard base in your state and skip the personality-of-the-month upcharge.
How we built this list
Cost data was pulled directly from each state's official DMV fee schedule on April 28, 2026, cross-referenced against the live online order portals listed in the comparison table. Where a state offers multiple specialty base plates at different price points (Texas, Tennessee, Florida), we list the standard vanity tier. Where a state rolls the vanity surcharge into the standard registration fee (Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kansas), the renewal column reflects that — you don't pay an additional vanity-only renewal beyond your normal registration cost.
Plate availability for the 10 example plates featured below was tested via PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on May 4, 2026. Every plate listed was AVAILABLE in at least one state at test time. We picked plates that demonstrate the cost-vs-availability tradeoff — some are cheap to register in Virginia ($10/year), others lock you into California's $103 initial fee. The cost diversity across this list mirrors the cost diversity across the table.
10 Pricing Vanity Plates Still Available
Wind horse. Available in 9 states, including both the cheapest (Virginia, $10/year) and the most expensive (California, $103 initial). If you live in Virginia, WNDHRS will cost you $100 over the course of 10 years. If you live in California and renew every year, the same plate runs $850 over a decade — actually a real cost difference for the same six characters of stamped aluminum.
Birdie. 9 states. Cheapest registration: Virginia at $10/year flat. Most expensive: California at $103 initial + $83 annual renewal. The personalized license plate cost spread on this single sequence ranges from one casual restaurant dinner per year to a small car payment, depending entirely on which state's DMV gets the application.
Eco-friendly. 7 states. The Virginia route is $10/year — about as cheap as a custom plate gets in the US. The California route is $103 initial because the Environmental Personalized program is hand-reviewed and the surcharge funds state environmental programs. Same plate, same letters, same physical product. The state you choose to register in is the variable.
Roadtrip — abbreviated. 8 states. Florida charges $28 per year and includes the cost in your standard registration renewal. Pennsylvania charges $102 once and rolls renewals into standard registration. The mid-tier states (Tennessee $35, Maine $25, West Virginia $15) sit comfortably between the two extremes. ROADTR's total 10-year cost ranges from $100 to $930 depending on state.
Kilowatt-hours. 9 states including Texas, where the cost depends entirely on which specialty base you pick — $30 standard up to $195 for premium designs like the Houston Astros plate. Texas is the most variable state for custom plate pricing. Virginia and West Virginia stay flat at $10–$15 regardless of design. PlateHog's Texas adapter shows availability against the standard base.
Vette love. 9 states. Ohio's vanity plate fee model is unique: $50 initial issuance + $10 renewal — you take a one-time hit in year one then pay nearly nothing for life. Over 10 years, Ohio works out to $140 total. That's cheaper than every state except Virginia and West Virginia, which is wildly underrated for a state with a real DMV bureaucracy.
Megawatt. 8 states. New York's $60 initial + $31.25 annual lands it firmly in the mid-tier — about $382 over 10 years for a single personalized plate. NY's Excelsior base plate is the standard issue and you can run any vanity sequence on it without an upcharge. The 8-character limit is a New York exclusive among our supported states.
Truck life. 9 states. Tennessee charges $35 once and rolls renewals into standard registration — meaning year-two-and-beyond is free as long as you keep the truck registered. That makes Tennessee the second-cheapest state in our coverage area for long-term ownership of a custom license plate, behind only Virginia.
Pushrod. 8 states. Maine charges $25 initial + $15 annual renewal — so a 10-year run is $160. The Maine BMV also offers vanity sequences on the popular lobster specialty plate at no upcharge, which is rare. Most states either don't offer specialty bases for custom sequences or charge extra for them. Maine's vanity-on-lobster combo is the underrated bargain of personalized plate pricing.
Get off Y. 7 states. Kansas's $40 initial + included-in-registration renewal model puts a 10-year run at exactly $40 plus your normal registration. That's the same all-in cost as one specialty Texas plate purchase. The Kansas Revenue Department refreshes vanity availability every 24 hours — slower than California's real-time API but plenty fast for casual plate hunting.

How much does a custom license plate cost in 2026?
Custom license plate cost in 2026 ranges from $10 per year in Virginia (the cheapest) to $103 for the initial issuance in California (the most expensive in our 11-state coverage area). Most states fall between $25 and $75. Annual renewals vary: Virginia, California, New York, and Maine bill the vanity surcharge separately every year, while Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Kansas roll it into the standard registration fee so you don't notice it after year one. See the full state-by-state cost table on this page.
What's the cheapest state for a custom license plate?
Virginia is the cheapest state in the US for a custom license plate at $10 per year. There's no separate initial-issuance premium — you pay $10 the first year and $10 every year after, indefinitely. Over 10 years of ownership that totals $100, which is less than a single year of vanity renewals in California. West Virginia is a close second at $15/year (rolled into registration in many counties).
What's the most expensive state for a custom license plate?
California is the most expensive state for a custom license plate among the 11 we cover. The Environmental Personalized program charges $103 for the initial issuance and $83 for each annual renewal — meaning a 10-year run costs $850 total. The fee funds the California Environmental License Plate Fund, which supports state environmental programs. Pennsylvania is a distant second at $102 initial (renewals are included in standard registration after year one).
How much does a personalized license plate cost in California?
A personalized license plate in California costs $103 for the initial issuance plus an $83 annual renewal fee. That's the standard Environmental Personalized program through the California DMV. Specialty California base plates (Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Coastal Commission) cost an additional $25–$50 on top of the personalization fee. California is the most expensive state for vanity plates in the US, but the revenue funds environmental programs that the state highlights as a public benefit.
How much for a custom license plate in Texas?
Custom license plate cost in Texas varies by base design. The standard MyPlates personalized plate runs $30 for one year. Premium specialty designs (Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, military, university) range from $50 to $195 per year. Renewals are included in your standard vehicle registration fee, so there's no separate annual vanity surcharge. Texas has more specialty plate variety than any state in our coverage area — over 300 different designs.
Does a custom license plate cost more for specialty designs?
Yes, in most states. Specialty base plates — military service, college alumni, environmental causes, professional sports teams, wildlife conservation — typically cost $25–$165 more per year than the standard vanity surcharge. Texas has the widest specialty range ($30–$195). California's Yosemite and Lake Tahoe plates add about $50 to the standard $103 personalization fee. Florida's specialty designs add $15–$50 depending on the program. Standard base plates with custom sequences are always the cheapest path.
Are custom license plate fees tax-deductible?
Custom license plate fees are generally not tax-deductible for personal use vehicles. If the plate is on a vehicle used for business, the registration fees (including the vanity surcharge) may be deductible as a business expense — consult a tax professional. Some states' specialty plate fees include a charitable donation component (environmental programs, university scholarships, wildlife conservation) that may be partially deductible if the donation portion is itemized on the registration receipt. California's Environmental License Plate Fund is one example.
