Question 1

Is EXCESS available in California?

No, the vanity plate "EXCESS" is currently taken in California. You can add it to your PlateHog watchlist to get notified if it becomes available. Plates sometimes open up when owners let registrations lapse or transfer to a new vehicle.

Question 2

How much does a vanity plate cost in California?

Accepted Answer

A personalized plate in California costs $50 initially plus $40 per year for renewal. Revenue funds the Environmental License Plate Fund.

Question 3

Can I check vanity plate availability in California online?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PlateHog connects directly to the California DMV system and returns real-time availability results in under 2 seconds. You can also check on the official state portal at CA DMV Plate Order.

Question 4

How long does it take to get a vanity plate in California?

Accepted Answer

After your plate text is approved, expect 4-6 weeks for production and delivery. Some states offer expedited processing for an additional fee.

Question 5

What characters are allowed on California vanity plates?

Accepted Answer

California vanity plates allow 2 to 7 characters using uppercase letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9) only. Spaces, hyphens, and special characters are not permitted.

Question 6

How do I order a vanity plate in California?

Accepted Answer

First, check availability using PlateHog to make sure your desired text is open. Then visit the California DMV website to submit your application and pay the $50 fee. Your plate will be mailed to you within 4-6 weeks.

Question 7

Why does the California DMV reject so many vanity plate applications?

Accepted Answer

The California DMV uses a multi-stage review: an automated profanity and slang filter, manual reviewer screening, and a final committee for borderline applications. Plates are denied for vulgarity, drug or gang references, sexual content, racial slurs, references to violence, and anything that resembles a government or law-enforcement plate. California publishes its rejected list under the Public Records Act — PlateHog's Hall of Shame indexes thousands of CA rejections so you can see what doesn't fly before you apply.

Question 8

Does the California environmental plate cost more than a standard plate?

Accepted Answer

California vanity plates are issued on the Environmental License Plate base by default — there is no separate 'standard' personalized plate. The $50 initial fee plus $40 annual renewal funds the Environmental License Plate Fund, which supports air quality, coastal conservation, and endangered species programs across the state. Specialty designs (Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Whale Tail) cost extra on top of the personalization fee.

Question 9

Can I transfer my California vanity plate to a new car?

Accepted Answer

Yes. California allows you to transfer a personalized plate to any vehicle you own using a REG 17 form, and you can also retain the plate (without a vehicle) for up to two years if you sell your car before buying the next one. The transfer fee is small — usually $20 — and the plate keeps its original character configuration so you don't have to reapply.
