A custom motorcycle license plate is a different beast from a car vanity plate. The plate itself is physically smaller — typically 7 inches by 4 inches versus 12 by 6 for a car — and the character limit drops accordingly. Most US states cap motorcycle vanity plates at 5 or 6 characters, where the same state would allow 7 on a car plate. That single constraint changes the entire creative game: every clever 7-character plate idea you've seen on a car is automatically off the table for your bike.

The good news: that constraint also means there's a lot less competition for the short, punchy plates that work well on a motorcycle. Two- and three-character plates that are taken in every state on the car side are sometimes still available on the moto side because the DMV runs separate plate pools for different vehicle classes. The bad news: not every state offers a custom motorcycle license plate program, and the ones that do vary in both cost and process. Some states use the same vanity application for cars and bikes; others have a dedicated moto application with stricter character review.

We've spent the last month testing custom motorcycle license plate ideas across the 11 states PlateHog supports — pulling from r/motorcycles, RevZilla forums, sportbike Discord servers, Harley owner groups, and adventure-bike communities. We've gotten 60+ candidate plates through the live availability check and we're sharing the 10 best survivors here. Every plate is 6 characters or shorter, every plate is verified available in at least one state as of May 2026, and every plate links to a live DMV check.

If you're shopping for a custom motorcycle license plate (also called a moto plate or bike plate), this guide covers the rules, the costs, the transfer questions, and the actual creative options. The single most important thing to know up front: your plate has to be short. Plan accordingly.

How we built this list

We compiled the motorcycle vanity plate character limit and pricing for each of the 11 PlateHog-supported states by reading current DMV publications and cross-referencing with the National Conference of State Legislatures' vehicle-registration database. Where states use a unified vanity plate application for cars and motorcycles, we noted the shared character cap; where states run separate programs (e.g., Pennsylvania's dedicated motorcycle vanity application), we recorded the bike-specific limit.

On the availability side, we tested 60+ custom motorcycle license plate candidates against PlateHog's real-time DMV adapters across all 11 supported states on May 6, 2026. Because PlateHog's standard checker queries the car-plate pool, the availability shown reflects the same plate text on a car plate; in most states the moto and car pools are separate, so a plate shown as 'taken' on the car side may still be available on the moto side. We've flagged this in the FAQs below. Every featured plate is 6 characters or shorter — meaning it fits the moto character cap in every state we cover.

Jolted. 5 characters — fits every motorcycle license plate character cap in every state. Seven states. The perfect electric-motorcycle plate (Zero, LiveWire, Energica) but reads just as well on a Ducati or a Hayabusa. JOLTD is one of the highest-availability custom motorcycle license plate ideas we tested.

The Volunteer State
TENNESSEE
M3
TN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Two characters — the rare moto-friendly two-letter-and-number combo that's still available in 4 states. Originally a BMW chassis code, but on a motorcycle it just reads as a clean, minimal moto plate. The kind of custom motorcycle license plate that says 'I picked this because I had taste,' not 'I ran out of ideas.'

FLORIDA
PDK
FL — FloridaVA — VirginiaOH — OhioTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Three characters. Originally Porsche's dual-clutch transmission, but for a sport-bike rider with a quick-shifter it's a perfect inside-joke custom motorcycle license plate. Seven states. Three-character plates are the visual sweet spot for the smaller motorcycle plate format — easier to read at speed than 5+ character plates.

VIRGINIA
GRABR
VA — VirginiaTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Grabber. 5 characters. Five states. Originally a Ford color name (Grabber Blue, Grabber Yellow), but on a motorcycle it reads as a brake-grabbing, throttle-grabbing rider's plate. GRABR is one of the more aggressive custom motorcycle license plate options on this list — appropriate for liter-class sport bikes.

Wind horse. 6 characters — fits the moto cap in all 11 states we cover. Nine states still have it. The wild-horse-meets-wind-in-your-hair imagery is more naturally a motorcycle plate than a car plate. WNDHRS is the highest-availability custom motorcycle license plate idea we tested across the entire list.

STNGNG

Stinging. 6 characters. Nine states. Originally a Mustang reference (Stang-ing) but it reads cleanly on a motorcycle as a sting-and-go rider plate. STNGNG works on anything from a Triumph Speed Triple to a KTM Super Duke — bikes that actually feel stinging fast in the canyons.

FLORIDA
GETOFY
FL — FloridaVA — VirginiaNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Get off Y. 6 characters. Seven states. The custom motorcycle license plate equivalent of revving at a tailgater. GETOFY is the rider plate for someone who has been told 'loud pipes save lives' once too often and wants to communicate in print. Works beautifully on a Harley or a sport-tourer.

FLORIDA
FASTNF
FL — FloridaVA — VirginiaOH — OhioTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Fast enough. 6 characters. Seven states. The honest moto plate. Most riders don't actually need a 200-hp liter bike — a 600cc supersport or a 900cc naked is FASTNF for canyon roads and freeway commutes. FASTNF is the custom motorcycle license plate for the rider who has matured past the horsepower-bragging stage.

BIRDIE
CA — CaliforniaFL — FloridaVA — VirginiaOH — OhioNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Birdie. 6 characters. Nine states. Originally a golf reference, but on a motorcycle it reads as a flying, lightweight, tucked-in rider plate. BIRDIE is the kind of custom motorcycle license plate that surprises everyone — the rider you didn't expect to be a golfer, the golfer who didn't tell anyone they ride. Best of both worlds.

VIRGINIA
COOLRD
VA — VirginiaNY — New YorkTN — TennesseeME — MaineWV — West VirginiaKS — Kansas

Cool ride. 6 characters. Six states. The most underplayed compliment a custom motorcycle license plate can give itself. Best paired with bikes that actually are cool rides — vintage Triumphs, Ducati Monsters, BMW R-series — rather than something that needs the plate to do the heavy lifting.

How to check if a vanity plate is available

The fastest way to check vanity plate availability is to use a multi-state checker like PlateHog. Here's how it works:

  1. 1.Type your plate idea into the search box on platehog.com — 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only.
  2. 2.See live DMV results across all 11 supported states in seconds. Available plates show green; taken plates show red.
  3. 3.Add taken plates to your watchlist if you want PlateHog to monitor them and email you the moment they become available.

How to actually order a vanity plate

Once you've found an available plate, you order it directly through your state's DMV — PlateHog doesn't process the order itself. Most state DMVs offer online vanity plate applications. The process typically takes 2–8 weeks depending on the state and plate design you choose.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can a motorcycle license plate have?

Most US states cap custom motorcycle license plates at 5 or 6 characters — shorter than the 7-character standard for car plates. The reason is physical: motorcycle plates are smaller (typically 7 in × 4 in versus 12 in × 6 in for cars), so fewer characters fit at a legible font size. Of the 11 states PlateHog covers, the typical motorcycle vanity character limit is: California 6, Florida 5, Texas 6, Virginia 6, Ohio 5, New York 6, Pennsylvania 5, Tennessee 5, Maine 6, West Virginia 5, and Kansas 5. Always verify the current limit on your state DMV's motorcycle plate application — some states have updated their formats in recent years.

Is a motorcycle vanity plate cheaper than a car vanity plate?

In most states, no — the personalized-plate fee is the same regardless of vehicle class. What's different is the underlying plate fee: motorcycle registration is typically cheaper than car registration, and the plate itself costs less to produce, but the vanity surcharge layered on top is the same. In California, a custom motorcycle license plate runs the same $103 initial / $83 renewal as a car vanity plate. Florida charges $28/year for either. Texas runs $85–$195 depending on plate design for both. The full state-by-state cost table earlier on this page applies to motorcycle plates as well.

Can I transfer my motorcycle plate to a new bike?

Yes, in every state PlateHog covers. Custom motorcycle license plates are tied to the registered owner, not the specific motorcycle, so you can transfer your moto vanity plate when you sell, trade, or upgrade your bike. The transfer process varies — most states require you to file a plate-transfer form with the DMV (sometimes online, sometimes in person), pay a small transfer fee ($5–$25 in most states), and submit registration documents for the new bike. The plate stays with you as long as you keep paying the annual vanity fee. Note: you can only transfer a motorcycle plate to another motorcycle — you can't move a moto vanity plate to a car or vice versa.

Do all states offer custom motorcycle license plates?

Most do, but the program details vary. All 11 PlateHog-supported states offer some form of custom motorcycle license plate, but the application process, character cap, and design options differ. Some states (Pennsylvania, Tennessee) run dedicated motorcycle vanity programs with their own application forms; others (California, Florida) handle moto and car vanity through the same online portal with separate plate-class selectors. A few smaller states still process moto vanity applications by mail only, which means processing times of 8–12 weeks rather than the 2–4 weeks typical for online applications.

Are motorcycle vanity plates the same plate text as car plates?

Not necessarily. In most states, the motorcycle vanity plate pool is separate from the car vanity plate pool — meaning the same plate text (e.g., FASTNF) might be available on a motorcycle even if it's already taken on a car, or vice versa. PlateHog's standard checker queries the car-plate pool by default, so a 'taken' result for a 6-character plate may still be available on the moto side. If you're specifically shopping for a custom motorcycle license plate, call your state DMV's vanity-plate desk to confirm availability in the moto-specific pool before placing an order — or use PlateHog as a first-pass filter and verify the moto-pool status directly.

What are the most popular motorcycle vanity plate themes?

The most popular custom motorcycle license plate themes break into five categories: rider identity (RIDER, BIKER, MOTO — almost all taken at this point), bike-specific references (V-twin, inline-four, displacement numbers), riding-style plates (RACER, TWISTY, TRACK), commute-bike plates (DLYRDR, COMMTR), and adventure/touring plates (ADVRDR, ROAMR, MILES). Across all five themes, the surviving plates in 2026 tend to be 5–6 character abbreviations rather than the full words, because the full words were claimed in the early 2000s. A custom motorcycle license plate that uses dropped-vowel abbreviations (BIKER → BKR, RIDER → RDR) has the best chance of getting through the DMV review.

Can I check if a custom motorcycle license plate is available?

Yes. PlateHog's free multi-state checker queries 11 state DMVs in real time. Type your custom motorcycle license plate idea (5 or 6 characters to fit the moto cap), and you'll see live availability for each state. Note the caveat in the previous FAQ: most state DMVs run separate availability pools for car plates and motorcycle plates, so PlateHog's first-pass results may not reflect the moto-pool status precisely. Treat PlateHog as the fast first filter and confirm with your state DMV's motorcycle vanity desk before ordering.
